Just curious, which headers are you guys using?
Brand name, size, model, and price you payed. ...and finally would you buy them again or go for something different? ![]()

DynoMax p/n 86118 ceramic coated Chevelle shorty headers. Prox $225 from Summit Racing. Lifetime warranty against rusting. Decent fit, although I had to remove a little metal from the passenger side motor mount bracket (maybe .100" from 1 square inch). It was hard to find a header gasket to seal the imperfect flanges, but stock metal-faced Fel Pro exhaust manifold gaskets seem to work OK. Another drawback is they have only 1.5" diameter tubes, which is probably a bit small. I like the fact that they don't hang down below the frame like full size headers, and after 3 months they still shine like new. Had some "HPC coated" Hedmans that started rusting after a few weeks! Turns out the coating was nothing more than high temp silver paint!

I just bought a pair of Hooker Competition headers. They fit pretty good and weren't hard to install. Getting rest of exhaust put on tuesday. I'll let you know how I like them.

hookers fit better,they use thicker metal.and if you put two stock gaskets with the metal sides so one faces the header and the other faces the head,then tighten it down,drive it for a couple of days then tighten them again,check again in a few times they will seal up good.

I have the Hooker Super Comps on my GMC, and i love them. As statd before, they are thick and seal up great, They don't seem to come loose, (never had to retighten them..knock on wood grain) They clear everything, eaisy to install with engine in.
Something I really lik about them, they exit paralell with the ground, instead of aimed at a slight angle. They are also tucked up pretty good too, whyle they to hang below the frame rail, they are tucked up pretty good. Even with my front springs that are a little tires, (they have the spring rate of a wet noodle) I have yet to slap them on the pavement. |

I have Hooker comps on the longhorn,Very pleased with the fit.......My only regret is that i didnt spend the extra for ceramic coating

Hooker Super Comps... the only way to go... Summit has them for less than any body I have ever seen. 2840 painted, 2840-1 ceramic coated.
Hooker headers from Summit (click here) Smaller diameter pipes flow less volume than large ones, but the exhaust in the smaller pipe flows faster. Until you reach the RPM where the sheer volume of exhaust gases require bigger primaries, smaller tubes scavenge far more efficiently. If you're using the engine in the 1,500-3,500 RPM range, which is typical for a street driven car, you definitely want 1- 1/2" to 1-5/8" primary tubes for a small block and 1-3/4" to 1-7/8" for a big block. Any bigger and you'll lose plenty of low end torque. Beyond 3,500 RPM it's a question of where you want the power peaks. As you can see from the charts below, small tubes don't lose their edge in horsepower or torque until you get above 5,500 RPM. Even if you're running a radical cam and blower, you're better off sizing your headers smaller rather than larger, unless you plan to do most of your driving at full throttle.

i have the DynoMax "shorties" for the chevelle too....i had no problems installing and didn't have to grind or cut anything when installing.

I'm real happy with the DynoMax cerama-coat for my BB .They fit great ( after i replaced the broken motor mount) , plenty of clearance ,look good ,tuck up nicely from Jeg's part # 289-86022

I have dynamax uncoat BB headers, I had the front jacked up but droped them in from the top easy I like them, wish I had coated, but can't complain if the old man bought them :-)

Ive got the summitracing $79 specials. They work fine and with copper gaskets Ive never had a leak. BTW the dynomax headers are the same headers. I just put a set in a coworkers 4WD 3/4 ton '76 and the only difference between his dynomax and my summit racing was the price and the box they came in. Summit buys from a lot of contractors for good deals. I remeber once asking them some technical questions about one of their torque converters. The summit tech rep couldnt answer so he gave me the number to the manufacturer . It was B&M. Turned out the converter was just a repackaged B&M street and strip converter.
You'd be surprised who makes what !

I have standard non-coated Heddmans on my truck. They were $105 from Summit a year ago (proably more now). They fit fine, and i didn't have to modify anything to get them in. I don't have any problems with them frying my starter either. They do have one weird thing though, the passenger side collecter points up towards the cab floor a little bit. It really isn't a problem, it just looks kinda weird. I would buy them again, but i would get a set of coated headers.

Like mikep, I also have the economy summit headers on my small block. The only problem I have is with the early '80's block, the dipstick is on the passenger side and that makes changing #6 plug a little bit of a challenge. No matter what brand you purchase, you can't go wrong with the "dead soft" aluminum gaskets, they are about $35-$40 a set, but won't burn or blow out and are reuseable. Something i forgot to mention on my responce there...
On the cheap headers, I had to use a wrench on all but 2 spark plugs, (have fun Jason!) but on my super comps, I only need a wrench for one plug. |

even the cheapie paper gaskets will work fine if you retorque them after a few heat cycles and then again after a few more. could probably use it a few more times after that. It doesn't take long to tighten 12 bolts and will keep your headers leak free. They will only blow through if hot exhaust gases start slowly leaking around beacause they haven't been re-torqued, and the pressure just makes the holes bigger. unless your flangs are bent, then you've got other probs. I only spent about $8 cnd, no leaks yet! with a set of used dynomax headers of an 85 chev 4x4, fit fine!

to all the guys going with air suspensions or big drops i DONT recommend the hooker comps.
i have a set of them on my 72 dropped 5" up front and they drag on speedbumps and some steep driveways, ive even dragged them going through an intersection with a big dip too fast. and mine have were coming loose a bit on the old engine, got a new engine in now so far they havent come loose, well see though. so if lowering your truck alot, DEFINETLY a negative on hookers |

Interesting, my truck will bottom out (commonly...worn front springs) and slam on what is left of the rubber bumpers, yet there isn't a single mark on my headers, and they been there for about 4 or 5 years.

The hooker comps hang approx 2 1/4" below the frame on my longhorn(Im set in 6/250 position). the truck is a 3-5 drop,with a 1 1/2" body drop. the front is a cut coil (a no no drop!),with the bump stops shaved off,& uses traction bar snubbers for cushion on the lower a arm..........I have bottomed the steering stop on the crossmember,& dont have any marks on the headers! im lookin to go another 1 -1 1/2" on front drop, & dont see that there would be a problem........AL

Summit specials. The right was easy to drop in, the left required some finessing with a ball peen hammer.

Here are some pics off what I run they are FlowTech HPC coated part #31500FLT from Advance Auto they are full length , They run $ 209.00. no clearance problems at all even with A/C. Been on for 2 years and still look new

I will take the info and mull it over. Just one more question though. Ceramic coating, how much heat does stop from going in the engine compartment? I know you all like the coating, but would it be worth the money in cold CANADA? ![]()

I dont know how much difference ther will be in eng comp heat, but the ceramic coating will also protect your headers, & keep them looking pretty. I have to remove my painted headers about every other season , to blast & paint them.......kinda wish i had spent the extra cash
