Need some math help

I have a inground pool that I am planning on filling with fill dirt. Can someone help verify Im on the right track?

Pool is rectangular 40' long. 20' wide. 3'-8' deep 50/50% split. I calculated 27700 gallons, and came up with about 138 cubic yards of fill. I figure ten yards
per dump truck load, and would need 14 truck loads????? Seems like too much to me.

Re: Need some math help

The average depth of the pool is (3'+8')/2 = 5.5' deep, so 40' x 20' x 5.5' = 4400 cubic feet. There are 3x3x3=27 cubic feet per cubic yard, so 4400/27 = 163 cubic yards.

Re: Need some math help

Depending on the type of dirt that you use to backfill the pool will create a soil shrinkage adjustment that you have to make due to compaction of the dirt. The dirt delivered in the dump truck will be "loose yards". If the material is compressable, it can shrink up to 30% when you compact the dirt, it will increase your needed import dirt quantity by up to 30%.

I agree that you have to figure in soil swell and shrinkage, but we only use 20% where I work.

Re: Need some math help

Well the previous owners were booted out of the house claimed bankruptcy and were foreclosed on. This house was waste deep in trash. The old owners stripped every fixture inside and out. Along with the many things they took were
the pool heater, pump and filters. I have found that there are enough projects and hobbies around here. Dont need the expenses involved with it. My insurance company has given me until September to either fence it off, or fill it.
I found a guy on CL that says he specializes in filling pools. He came by for an estimate, but never heard from him again. Bad part is that all of the dirt will have to be dumped on my road then it has to go down a steep side yard with a backhoe or something?

Sounds to me like some chainlink fence would be cheaper and quicker . Fence it off until you get some extra cash to get a new heater, pump, and filter system. Once it is fenced off and your insurance company see's it done they won't bother you about it any more. Just my opinion.

put up what we call hog wire cheaper by the roll and use metal stake post, probaby have it fenced in in less than a half day by yourself.

nother idea, sell it on ebay be sure to put buyer responsible for transporting it, lol.

Re: Need some math help

Well since you want to feel it in here is what I would do. ( My Opinion) 57 stone has a 100% compaction and would be less work then tamping the dirt fill in lifts of 16" to 24". Bust some drain holes in the bottom of the pool and fill with the stone up to about 2' below ground level and then put a filter fabric over the stone then come in with some fill, topsoil and animal fertilizer mix and you would have a great garden area.

Re: Need some math help

Don't know about in Des Moines but in this part of Washington sand is cheap. There's a local guy that sells a dump truck and trailer full for $60 delivered. I'd fill it with sand except the top couple feet then put top soil on it. Also on the steep yard deal, one of the local contractors has a small offroad dump truck with tracks for that kind of thing.

Re: Need some math help

i would probably fence it off also.

you know, there is some new thing out there where you use salt or some crap with your pump and filtration system and it keeps your pool clean with no chemicals at all. at least i think that's how it works. someone else here at hte forum knows, because i learned about it the first time by reading their post. i think you just stick a chunk of salt in the filter or some crap.

please, someone chime in and fill me in again

Re: Need some math help

yep you will need 30% more due to compaction

as you fill it in do it in layers.(8-10")at a time.use a tamper(juming jack)or a small sheep foot packer to pack the fresh ground.I would leave the area a few inches higher because it well settle some still.

Re: Need some math help

UPDATE. I had a guy email me. He said he'd fill it in for only $15K. Left no credentials. I dont think I'd bother wasting my time.

A REAL contractor visited me and said we'd find an econmical way of doing this. He said he'd be able to roung up about twenty dump truck loads of clean fill in about a two week period. They would be dumped on my property. After all of the fill came my contractor would bring his 4WD tractor over and just charge me for the actual tractor work. Hope this works out. It would save me from spending arount $3000.00 for fill. "dirt cheap" where'd that come from?

He probably has an motive for doing this, he probably has 20 loads of root infested topsoil he has to remove from another project at his expense, so he's doing you and himself a "favor."
