Got a new fuel door for my 67 stepper fender

And no, it's not the turn signal thing-a-ma-jigger. I went to a yard and got a fuel filler door off of a 96 or so Silverado that had been smacked in the back for $20. Please ignore the large amount of bondo on the fender, 90% of it is completely unnecessaryas the fender is actually pretty straight, and no, I wasn't the one who put it all on there I need to do a little hammer and dolly work to get the flat area a little straighter so I can have someone weld the door in for me (I really wish I had a garage so I could buy a welder) I must be cursed with bondo because I noticed a dent by the filler door and it had been smacked and repainted! I stripped it and a couple hammer smacks had it straight again. I think this will look neat and different. I wanted to "keep" my truck a 67 (no sidemarkers) and I don't want to put the filler in the bed (what if I'm hauling a load and on empty?) I think this will lookk good and have only ever seen a door added to fleetsides.

It`s yours,do what you want.I hate seeing a good`67 fender cut for that.Might as well use a`68-up and put it where the light is.Just my take on it.I`m sure it`ll look good.I`d rather just fill it under the fender,no visible filler on the body at all.

I don't like 68-72 fenders, filler under the fender is a pain in the ass and gets covered in mud, and yup, it's my fender If it makes you feel better I sent a rust free 67 hood to the scrap yard last year

go for it, I think it will be a cool mod and be somewhat original looking. Plus it serves the purpose well.

it's an easy fix for someone, just weld up a piece of sheet metal

That will look really nice and it will keep the smooth 67 look, yet be modern too. Please post pic when done.

That looks slick. I am taking the fuel door on a Ducati Monster for mine. I had one on my '68 VW bug and it was nice. It has a built in lock and it has a carbon fiber inset, so it matches my other accents.

I thought maybe there was another difference when 67chevyredneck said "I don't like 68-72 fenders". I thought special-k was implying to cut out the marker light on 68-72 and replacing it with the later filler door to essentially end up with a markerless fender like the 67 only with a modern gas door . Someone may even trade a 68-72 fender that doesn't need bodywork for the original 67 fender and both sides will be happy unless there is another difference 67crn doesn't like. I personally would like the filler as high as possible on the fender. The only thing I can't stand on the 73-87 2wd (specially lowered ones) is how low the filler is. It kills my back pumping gas in them which is one reason I sold my 87.

P.S. If I owned a lowered stepside and wanted an underbed tank, I would put the filler on top of the rear fender if possible. It would make filling a lot easier even with a gas can. Has anyone ever done this?

I'm going with the fuel filler in the bed floor to keep a nice smooth exterior appearance

I say go for it and if someone out their wants a smooth 67 step then just weld up the marker light and be done! A friend used this same door in his 57 step side an dit looks like it should have been their all along. Give us some step by steps (no pun intended) of your progress.

I also like the top mount idea!

Yes, there is a design difference in the 68-72 fender, there's a turn signal with a raised metal lip area around it. I'd say that's a design difference, just as the 69-72 grills are a design difference. Why would I want to go through the trouble of trading fenders when I have a perfectly good one I can cut up? I want the filler door low in the fender (about 1" up from the body line). You acutally can't put it much higher than where I show it now due to the fender starting to slope back. I'll be sure to post pics when it's cut up and all done.
