Camaro for DD ?
We my wife and I need to get a car for our daughter . Her VW bus is dead and now her Honda Civic passed away also . I think a Toyota would be a good idea . My C-10 is going to kill us in gas money and its not something that would be good to take to school with her next year. Whatdya all think about this ?

Re: Camaro for DD ?
I never liked the berlinetta edition. But my firebird that had that body style type was a pretty good car. The only repairs I had to do was front pads and rotors, along with the flex hoses to the calipers, but that was it. I think I put 20,000-25,000 on it before I sold it. Did I read your post right, that your truck was going to cost you(you and your wife) too much, to have your daughter drive it to school. If me and my sister wanted to have a car we had to pay insurance, gas, repairs and pay my dad back for the car. But, I have never been a parent, so I dont know what its like, just my 2 cents, and I am in no way trying to tell you how to raise your kids.

Re: Camaro for DD ?
I think the price is a bit much for the age of car and the mileage (at least compared to here), but in general I think a V6 camaro is a decent daily driver. Should get at least mid to high 20s with it.

For that money and mileage, I'd get another Honda. What happened to the Civic?

Re: Camaro for DD ?
Four winters ago when my construction work was real slow i worked part time for a guy who tows cars that people donate to charity. the ones he picked up were the higher mileage ones that would be towed to a local scrap yard and either parted or scrapped or sold whole from the junkyard
Long story short is i used to buy some of these cars and sell them myself. I had a honda cvcc (87) and it was rusted out in the rear quarter. I got the car for $500 and sold it to a neighbor for $700. it had 180K on it or so. She drove that car to 240K on it and would still be driving it except someone bit her full rear and destroyed it. the only thing that car went for was a fuel pump the entire time she had it id look for either a honda or toyota as they seem to be reliable i dont think id go for a camaro or a gas eater while shes in college.. just basic reliable cheap transportation is what she needs

I have mixed feelings about this , when I was a kid my parents paid for my insurance but I paid for gas and cars (with some help from parents) Now my daughter pays for insurance and gas and we may make her pay some of the car back HOWEVER I also see that her getting good grades will help her and us (parents) as in getting help (scholarships etc.) for college to do that she shouldn't be burning too many hours at work while she's in High school to pay for gas. So until she pays off some insurance dept. to us we will be helping out with gas. Quote:
10 minites away. next morning it wouldn't start . was getting spark but kinda weak so I thought maybe it needed a coil , just for the heck of it I decided to do a compression test and it was 100 110 70 60 , not good ! thinking split at the head gasket , but it doesn't really matter cause it'll still have weak spark this car is done ! Oh one thing I work for Toyota so I have a shop of techs to answer questions as well as parts at 10 % over cost . But I prefer old American !

Re: Camaro for DD ?
NONHOG, I feel the same way as you and your wife's thinking. My daugther has not been able to work much, but her work with her acadmeivcs has helped tremendously with here college. So far my college expenses have been gas and insurance on her 96 Bonneville. The scholarships she has gotten has more than made up for the $3000 I paid for that Bonneville 3 years ago.
BTW I am not a fan of the 3.1/3.4 V6 engines. I know too many folks with problems with them. However the 3.8 has been solid in several of my cars. The Bonne gets 29 on her hwy commute, so it's not that bad on gas either. 160,000 and still runs great.

Re: Camaro for DD ?
I drove an 86 Z28 for about a year. Not the best handling or driving cars, especially for a girl. They're kinda big and bulky. My girlfriend (now my fiance) hated that car. Although, I never had any issued with it.
One thing to look into, I can't remember if GM released the 700R4 in 82 or 83 so it may/may not have overdrive. If it does, the 700R4 was a pretty weak tranny the first few years, although with that mileage, it's probably been rebuilt? With that said, it looks like a nice car and pretty cheap (with 190K I'd offer $1,500 cash and go from there). It would be fun to drop a 455 in it and keep it for yourself ![]()

Re: Camaro for DD ?
I think that is a bit overpriced, I bought an 83 Camaro Berlinetta for $600 CAD in running condition, just needing some minor things. Found out how much insurance was going to be on it for me, and sold it to another guy for more than I paid for it.

Re: Camaro for DD ?
I'd get a toyota prius or some other hybrid alot better on gas than any old truck my truck runs 100 to 150 in gas money every two weeks and I have to buy 93 octane cause if I put 87 in it it starts sputtering and cuts off and then I start calling it all kinds of names.

Re: Camaro for DD ?
Gotta agree here. I drive late 80's Accords, awesome on gas and very trouble free. Better ride and alot less tinny than a civic too. They are dirt cheap and I rarely ever have any repair bills, which means more $$ in my pocket for other things like truck parts. Check em out, (just try get a fuel injected one - '88 in US I think, '89 for sure) they are worthless.

Re: Camaro for DD ?
I think the car is a bit high for mileage and year it is. But that car should have the 2.8 V6 they were good motors, I had one with 200,000 and was still going strong. And it was decent on gas mileage also. I would offer them 1500 and see where that gets you.
But for dependabilty I would probablly look for another foreign job. Gotta admit those Japanese cars have a good rep.

Re: Camaro for DD ?
That is way too much money for a 26-year old car with that many miles. I'd recommend a econobox of some sort. I'm a huge proponent of Saturns....I paid $2550 for my '97 with 122k on it 3.5 years ago, and have put 55k mostly trouble-free miles on it (very few problems other than routine maintenance). On the highway I get 38-42 miles per gallon. Its been a great college car for me. Also very cheap to insure, the Camaro will be more expensive. I see '96-'00 Saturns on Craigslist here around the same price as that Camaro all the time, usually with 100-150k on them.

Re: Camaro for DD ?
I agree I like the old skool American cars but I think another little foreign one might be the trick. That aint a bad Camaro it should have the 700r4 with the overdrive. I picked up mine same as that with a tiny bit of body damage and the V8 and only paid out 800$. I would say that Camaro is not worth over like 1400-1600$$ for how old and the mileage. It looks like its in great shaper though.

My brothers '99 Trans Am with the 350 LS1 gets 28 or so on the highway, but it cost 10K used with 100K miles on it, it may be out of your price range but its a thought.

Re: Camaro for DD ?
I personally love 3rd gens. I'm not quite sure how well I'd trust is as a daily driver for my daughter tho. I tend to stick to the late 80s early nineties 3.8L GM FWD cars for reliability. Liz has a 95 camaro that was ragged out and reliability was OK but we replaced it with newer truck cause It started burning a qt of oil every 500 miles.... I would definitely look it over very well and if it seems clean and well taken care of it will probably make an excellent car. My 84 was very well abused when I got it, same with Liz's 95, and her car I didn't hesitate to drive back and forth to work 20 miles a day till the oil consumption issues...

Re: Camaro for DD ?
I'd be more inclined to get a 305 TPI or TBI car with a 700R4. Should still get fairly good gas mileage, and they are pretty reliable. TPI/TBI means it will start up every morning, and Gen 1 small block chevy means very cheap to maintain, parts available anywhere you go, and just good reliability in general. Not to mention decent passing power and acceleration.

Re: Camaro for DD ?
Prices on clean 3rd Gen Camaros are going up for some reason. I had a '91 Z and was shocked at how much they are going for now when i checked, out of curiosity. A clean Iroc or Z28 can be $5k or more easily
They are old, there are not that many of them on the roads anymore, so if you find a clean example that is not totally ragged out , it costs some money. And its a Camaro to boot -- believe it or not, some day it will be considered a classic (and a kid would think it is anyway because of the age) I'd still offer $1600 first and go from there though, but if the interior is not too ragged out, then that seems like a decent enough deal The cars are easy to work on too, i had to replace the clutch numerous times on mine, along with many, many other things i did to it
