HELP needed with identifying year of ignition lock required!
Hi, I am planning to swap out my non-tilt steering column with a tilt one I bought off ebay a while back. The seller wasn't sure what year it was from, and it came with no ignition lock cylinder or key. I know they are available for sale, but wondering how to get the correct one for my "new" tilt column?
![]() Any help GREATLY appreciated! Many thanks! |

Re: HELP needed with identifying year of ignition lock required!
looks like a 73-82 column to me any cylinder should work from those years
if you take the turn signal switch out you should see if there are clips or a screw in there to hold the cylinder in

I dunno, I looked in some of the catalogs I have, like LMC and others, and they show different ones for tilt or no tilt wheel, and different ones again for 73 to 78 and later, so I really don't know what the differences are....

Re: HELP needed with identifying year of ignition lock required!
does it have a dimmer switch located down by the ingnition switch?? if not then i am positive that is a 73 through 78 column...as they had the dimmer switch on the floor. that and that looks like the older style ignition switch to me... ya might try backing away from the column a bit and getting more of it in one pic...would be alot easier to tell

Re: HELP needed with identifying year of ignition lock required!
My old 83 had the dimmer switch on the floor. I think 84 was the first year to have the dimmer switch on the column.

Hm, I'll take a couple pics from farther away, maybe borrow my wife's camera for clearer shots. I'll check on if it has a dimmer switch on the column (?) Not sure how to tell if it does though...

Re: HELP needed with identifying year of ignition lock required!
OK, I pulled the trun signal cam out tonight and took a look behind it. I do NOT see any screws to hold the ignition key switch in there, or even a screw hole anywhere for that. At the bottom of the key switch "wel"l, there is a sort of horizontal slot (at 90 degrees to the well) in the area behind the turn signal cam, and kind of a slot in the other side of the well also. And running down the well is a groove, which near the bottom turns into a square hole for some kind of clip? I am guessing? Any ideas so far?

Re: HELP needed with identifying year of ignition lock required!
Hey - I forgot to ask: if the dimmer switch is on the column, where is it located on there?
