Help With Wine...

There seems to be an alcohol based trend with posts of mine as of late, but thats ok.

I'm planning a romantic shin-dig for my girlfriend and I for Valentines day and Her b-day, since they're one day apart. So, of course wine is typically involved.

However, being a down home no nonsense kinda guy, I've only drank beer, with some occasional shots thrown in...whatever. Classy for my is paying a few dollars extra for Pabst Blue Ribbon, haha.

So, what is a good bet for some good tasting wine? Like, watching a movie kinda deal.

Otherwise, I'll probably go with Boonesfarm....since EVERYONE likes Boonesfarm...

Any advice? Please? haha.

-Sam.

Re: Help With Wine...

Don't pay more that 15-20 dollars a bottle. my wife is really into local wines, but I do know of a couple good california wines as well as a good international.

go with red. it's more romantic. a good merlot, Cab or Zinfidel.

Gnarly Head old vine Zinfendel is top notch. also Black Stone makes a pretty good Merlot.

There is an argentine wine called Dona Alicia or something like that. they have a good merlot also.

all these suggestions should be around $10 a bottle and are very good highly rated bottles.

Re: Help With Wine...

I'm with Jon67 on Merlot. Its much easier to tolerate than Cab Sav.

Beaujolais is a pretty nice "drinkin wine" too thats not too nasty -- at least for my taste buds

Old School Miller is the champagne of beers though

Re: Help With Wine...

I've done tons of design for wine labels, and one of the perks is free wine. There are some great buys in the $12-15 range.

I would suggest going to a real wine shop or asking the wine steward at your local grocery store for suggestions within your price limit. If you aren't a fan of wine, you may consider something light and slightly sweet. If you want a true red, look at Merlot and Syrah.

I highly recommend Milbrandt Vineyard's Traditions Merlot (http://milbrandtvineyards.com/trad_2006_merlot.asp). I'm not sure what stores you have in your area, but it is usually around $12-15 (and it's an award winning label )

If you want a white, I'd look at a Riesling. There are sweet and dry styles around, so you can pick what suits you and you're gal best.

Think about the label and how she will look at it too. A huge part of wine is the experience, so as long as the wine is decent and she is happy, she'll remember it as a good wine.

Oh, get some real glasses too, no plastic!

Re: Help With Wine...

I much prefer wine as opposed to beer but seem to drink beer more often. Since it appears you're not sure of what wine you like, I'd highly recommend a white wine as opposed to a red. I feel they're much more palatable and since you want this to be a relaxing, enjoyable experience for the both of you a Riesling or a simple Zinfandel would be my recommendation as well.

Re: Help With Wine...

Beringer White Zinfandel is what my wife and I used to drink. We seldom open a bottle since we will not drink one before it goes bad.The key to wine is finding one you like and enjoying it on special occasions.I don't care for wine so have never developed a palate for it.I agree with the suggestion of a White or light wine for a novice although a Merlot is also a great choice. Many females prefer the Merlot.
Pair it with a cheese and crusty french style bread for a light snack and you should be good.

Re: Help With Wine...

Since you aren't a wine drinker I would go for something that doesn't taste to oaky or leave your mouth feeling like it's full of cotton balls. Try any reisling or lambrusco. They are both moderately sweet. Reislings go well with fish and you can find a lambrusco to go with anything. My recommendation is the Emilia or Daunia.

'm not much of a wine person, but I find it strange that nobody's mentioned: Annie Greensprings, Red Ripple, or he wine in a plastic bag, that's stuffed in a box; & then put into the refrigerator.

OWwwww....makes my head hurt!.... But it does the trick.

Also I would recommend a sweeter wine as opposed to a dry wine. Seems most 'non-wine drinkers' like it better. Good luck.

This is another my Wife likes. Also I mentioned that Argentine wine earlier. It's a Malbec not a Merlot. very smooth and easy to drink.

you also can't go wrong with that bottle of Italian Chianti. You know the one with the bottle that the bottom is straw. Italian restaraunts use them as candle holders. good stuff.
