used motor ???
so, when I get my tax return. I want to use that to get my truck running better. and to do that I need to get a new motor till I can get funds to get the old motor re-built. so, when I do go and get the new-used motor. what do I need to look for to get a decent one? I know that it is best to hear it before it comes out, but that cant always happen. I am going to try to get a compleat pan to carb motor. if passable, it seems like it would be easer to put in when the time comes. also, when the time comes to put it in. what should I plan on replacing? belts, oil change, new hoses? thanks, matt

Re: used motor ???
I got one to stick in my truck for a while - a 350 that was running when they pulled it out. It was a crate motor somebody put in a '79 Blazer and then the tranny went - they scrapped the truck and I got the motor. I replaced the dizzy, the alternator, belts and hoses, fuel pump, and rebuilt the carb and the ps pump. It runs o.k., but leaks oil like a sieve. I got it pretty much complete for $600, and it'll work for me until I can afford a nice motor.

Re: used motor ???
I won't buy a motor that's not still in the vehicle. There's just no way of knowing what you're getting. Look on Craigslist for an older truck/car that's got a rough body, but you can test drive. Also, that way you know you've got all the parts you need.

Re: used motor ???
hmmm. well finding one that is running seems to be hard to come by cause it seems as though everyone pulls the motor out befor selling it. what key word you think I should try using? I already use sbc and chevy 350. maybe there are some other ones you can think of to get more results?? thanks all!

Re: used motor ???
I would just try Caprice, Impala, Camaro, pickup, etc. That way you find people who have a vehicle to sell who aren't thinking about the value of the engine/trans. When the price of gas went sky-high, it seemed like older 3/4 tons and one tons in poor shape were going cheap.

Re: used motor ???
Just type in 350 in the search box and if there are some in your area.. they will be present. I am thinking about doing the same thing because I am tired of wrestling with mine. I have found a couple really good used motors. Will get until I can get around to building mine. I am pretty good about reading BS from owners about stuff like this. There are some good used motors out there if you look.. or you can go to pick part and pull a used one yourself. There is a guy in my area making a killing selling used motors from junkyard. He advertises them as good runners and even guarantees them.

Re: used motor ???
Just a thought from my book of OH BOYs----If it cannot be verified running or it is not sitting on a machine shop floor, with a reputation of some quality---walk away. Just had a lesson a few years ago and it is still vivid in my mind. Don't let someone sell you a "DEAL", because it is going to cost you later. It is time for the swap meets to start back up and many so called "DEALS" are on the floor, but if the seller has no way to start it, then buyer beware. A good sales person would list it ---"Can be heard before buying".

Re: used motor ???
Yes, there is always the chance of finding one in a quality wrecking yard. Most of the bigger, better yards (at least in the PNW) offer a pretty good no smoke/no knock warranty and some even will cover all or part of the R&R labor if the engine proves bad. They often offer free delivery but be prepared to deal with a core charge, in many cases.
