Mini Spool?

Have any of you had experience with installing a mini spool in a truck 12 bolt? I have one from auburn gear that I need to install, I want to know if I can do it myself or not.

Re: Mini Spool?

it's super easy take about a hour, drop your cover off and slide your axles out and pull out the cross shaft and your spider gears will fall out and the just put the spool in there place I would guess it will have slots for your c-clips, put them in and throw the cover back on and your done

Re: Mini Spool?

what nate said but just be sure to remove the bolt that holds the cross shaft to the carrier. if you try and remove the cross shaft without that little bolt out, life will be hard. chris.

Re: Mini Spool?

It's not hard once you get it apart you will see, I put off putting my locker in for about 2 weeks when I got it and it was realy easy to get apart and back together. You dont even have to take the tires off just get your truck jacked up enough that you can sit under there nicley and get yourself a 6pack and get to work. Why are you putting in a spool in the first place? If your driving around on the street with those stickymickys I would worry about breaking an axle and watching your tire pass you down the road.

Re: Mini Spool?

Well the spool was the cheapest way for me to lock the axles, but I am worried about breaking something either on the street or the track. Any advice on simple ways to keep the axles in? C clip eliminators?

Re: Mini Spool?

you could put a carrier locker in it thats more work and might require a gear change I'm probly going to build the 12 at first with a c-clip kit and a detroit locker in it the spool is cheap but I can see either a broken axle or a destroyed carrier, and ring and pinion set I think that you should just send the spool back and get a good locker and gear set but whatever you do dont put a powertraxx in it, I have gone through 2 of them

Re: Mini Spool?

I think I will stick with the spool for now, and try the eliminator kit. Eventually I might have to step up to a 9 inch. Thanks for the tips

Re: Mini Spool?

google a lock right locker, you won't need eliminators for it, IMO it will end up being easier and cheaper in the long run verses a mini spool and eliminators.

Re: Mini Spool?

Does the "lock right" locker eliminate the C-clip??? I had a
"No-Slip" which is by Richmond Gear as well, and I swear it still had clips. I Could be wrong

Re: Mini Spool?

Wow I didn't know they wanted that much for eliminators, they want like 150 for a set of moser ones through summit, and the still require machining on the axles.

Re: Mini Spool?

buy a 9 inch and forget about it.

A friend of mine ordered one yesterday for his 67 camaro. He bought 35 spline axles an aluminum nodgular center section with moser axles and a spool made to bolt in his camaro for about 1800. Then you can forget about it.

Re: Mini Spool?

A spool with stock axles is not so hot like others have mentioned - before investing in a truck 12 bolt that isn't that strong anyway, look at a 9" or a Dana 60 drop in. DTS sells a dana 60 with locker for like 2K AND you can swap over your drums.

No they keep the c-clips, that's why I mentioned it to him, the price of the eliminators, mini spool plus the machine work will be more then the lock right. Besides welding up the spider gears (belive it or not there is a proper way to do this LOL) that's about the cheapest easiest.

I can't wait till I'm showing off new time slips. I still need several pieces but I have a real good start on my 548 short block.

Re: Mini Spool?

That Fab 9 housing looks sweet. Which is better bang for the buck, 9 inch or Dana 60? And for you guys running full drag trucks, what do you use to lock the axles? What would be best for a street/strip ride?

Re: Mini Spool?

It depends on your amount of street driving but with heavy axles in a 9 inch ford you will never break one so a spool is fine for some street driving and its much cheaper than a good posi or locker. My big arguement for the ford is I can drop the pumpkin and take to someone and get gears changed allot easier than getting someone to come lay under my truck in my garage. some people say the ford is allot more expensive but I disagree.

Re: Mini Spool?

Thats what I found appealing, I like being able to drop the carrier and ether swap it with another one or have it easily rebuilt.
