Borla Exhaust
Is anybody running Borla XR-1 mufflers on their truck? I'm looking for a muffler that has good grunt, tone and throaty sound without being to loud. I'm currently running 40 series flow masters and have looked at 30 series but they seem a little loud as well as black widow. Any suggestions or experience with Borla?

Re: Borla Exhaust
I can't speak for Borla but my Magnaflows with my headers sounds frickin' awesome on my 454. Best tone from an exhaust that I have had in my 30 plus years of owning cars.

The Borla XR1's have a sound of their own, almost like you took some kind of exotic car like a Lamborghini or the brand new 100,000 dollar Corvette, and put a big nasty cam and long tubes on it lol I've done all the homework on exhaust for our trucks if you have any questions let me know. One thing to add, the sound will change if you have an X or H pipe, or regular duals. Each one of the three types affects the sound as well as the length of the pipe AFTER the muffler, big difference. X-pipe will sound much more crisp and high pitched throaty, it's absolutely my favorite and always gets the best mid and top range dyno numbers hands down with no sacrifice on low end power. H-pipe will be a much deeper, low pitch throaty sound, very bass-y (bass-y?? lol) and seems to help low to mid-range power, but gives up a little on the top end to the X-pipe. Regular duals gives up 15 hp to the X and H pipes on a 350hp motor, and sound like every other truck out there (including mine). It's a little more high pitched than the H-pipe, less bass-y, but not as crisp or throaty as an X-pipe. Tail-pipes dumped before the axle vibrate everything, and are lower pitched, the further out you go the higher pitched it will be, and dyno shows that tail-pipes give you a little more power on the top end but it's marginal at best, not noticeable at all from the seat. That's all I can think of right now ![]() https://youtu.be/yuJwLOOP8fE XR-1's with a nice cam Last edited by Mrturner1; 06-27-2016 at 06:41 AM. |

Re: Borla Exhaust
Can't speak for the trucks but I did have them on my vette and loved the sound of them. I believe by what you are describing you would be more than happy with how they sound

Re: Borla Exhaust
I have the XR-1's on my truck with an H-pipe. These clips are with a 10.5:1 468" BB, 245* @ .050" cam (301* advertised duration), .650" lift, ProSystems 950 HP carb.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hIiMGL-8Tp8 during assembly https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0W63BvVvspQ Here's another short clip. Sorry, I don't have anything of it going down the road or roasting the tires off, but you get the idea. They sound good going down the road, but when you hammer on it, they sound like a grenade going off! I used the Borla's because I don't like Magnaflows or Bullets, and the case size of the XR-1's made them easy to fit under the truck.

Re: Borla Exhaust
It's hitting like that at a 1000-1100rpm idle. It's not idled down like a lot of people to do make their cams sound 'big'. None of that matters now, I blew that motor up.
