455 in a 70 C10?
Hey all... I was looking for some opinions... A friend at work is selling a 455 big block, with a 450 TH tranny... headers, carb, shift kit and drive shaft.... all for $600..... I have a 70 C10 begging for it.... The motor is out of a Pontiac, so I don't think it will be a straight swap.... Anyone know how difficult this will be? Anyone know of a reason why I shouldn't put it in my C10? Thanks!!!

I havent tryed a 455 Poncho, but did run a 455 Olds, & a 425 cad. With any nonstock swap, there will be a little fabrication, & a few headaches to deal with. Try giving Longhornmail a shout, his truck had a 350 poncho in it, & I think he has pics of the eng mounts........crazyL

Get your hands on some '72 big block motor mount towers. This is a one year only item, so it'll be hard to find. Desert rat usually has some for sale, seems like he found a stash of them or all the 72 big blocks ended up in the desert.
Anyways, a poncho will dang near bolt up to the towers. The guy who installed mine used some lug nuts as spacers, but i doubt it was needed. You'll need to run the fuel line on the drivers side, you might want an oil filter relocation kit, (look under a pontiac...you'll see why I say relocate the filter) and you'll need to run the pontiac tranny. You should be able to move your tranny cross member to the TH400 position and it should work. A drive shaft mod may be in order depending on what your truck has in it right now. I say go for it. Small blocks and yes, even big blocks (I'm talking chevy ones here) all get kinda booring after a while. Ther's nothing like some one drooling over your custom fab work and begging for instructions on how you did it. That is one of the reasons i am going with a Caddy big block in my Longhorn. Oh, welcome to the club. |

ENGINE FAB:
I too am greatfull to the advice of Longhorn. I have a complete Buick 455/TH400 out of a 74 Electra, and was wondering if there was a way to install the torque monster in my 71 GMC 4X4. The 455 engines were only produced for 6 years, and getting hard to find. Thanks, Don

Well...a 4X4 may pose some problems. I can't speak for you on that one.
