sandblasting a frame

I was looking to have my frame blasted. It is mostly rust free and I already stripped half of it. I just wanted it perfect for a fresh start. I just received a quote of $400 dollars which I think is way too much. What is the average price to have JUST A BARE FRAME blasted. The guy also said to coat it with a rust preventative paint would bring the total cost to $550.

Re: sandblasting a frame

I'm in Mass and you are in RI, everything seems to be higher around here? There is a powdercoater up in Pembroke that might powdercoat it for about the same? I could ask or give you the number if you want.

Seems high to me. I recall being quoted about $270 for just the blasting. Good Luck JW76

Re: sandblasting a frame

the funny part about the estimate is that their site says that they will take a new car or truck and blast the whole underside suspension frame and body clean it and then undercoat it for 399 or for 499 they will do any car 1 years or older.

Re: sandblasting a frame

They are D&T powdercoating in Pembroke MA. They don't always answer the phone. You want to ask for Don. You can tell him the guy with the chevy orange transfer case sent you? Don't know if that will help any? 781-294-9222

Let me know what he says.

Mark

Re: sandblasting a frame

I know I am a little far away in Indiana, but I got my frame, axle, control arms, springs and cross member for $175. went to a small industrial shop that did big trailers. 1 day turnaround, very happy with the work

Re: sandblasting a frame

I called a place in Coventry RI American Paint and Sandblasting and got an estimate of 225 to blast the frame, front crossmember, and control arms and he said 650 to prime everything with epoxy and then coat with a satin black urethane. Seems to be the best price in the Rhode Island area. Still waiting on the guy from Pembroke to call back. Just thought I would update

Re: sandblasting a frame

Why not buy a sandblaster and do it yourself? Or worst case rent a blaster. The frame rails are tuff and you can't hurt them with a blaster. Others have come here and learned to weld, paint, do bodywork. Why don't you learn to sandblast that frame and save your $ for the other stuff. Thats my .02 .

Re: sandblasting a frame

I have in the past sandblasted my own things. I set up my compressor for it and made a blaster. It worked great except that my garage is attached to the house so no matter how much I tried the sand got EVERYWHERE. I tried to blast in the backyard, but I got too much condensation in the line and it turned out to be a pain. I am still finding sand in the garage door tracks in my cabinets etc. I have access to a blasting cabinet at my fathers shop so I can do anything under 30 inches myself, but other than that my parents say no.

Re: sandblasting a frame

My garage is also attached to my house. Im 17 so I aint got money to have my stuff blasted so I have to do everything myself. I went and got me a 10x8 tarp and a 4x8 peice of ply wood. Using one wall of the garage, I attached the tarp and wrapped it around making it a 3 sided inclosure. Take your ply wood and make you a little door. That pretty much makes it a large blasting cabinet of sorts. Anyway it keeps the sand of my dads 67 mustang. Just an idea for ya. It also doesnt cost much and you can re-use the tarp and ply wood.

Re: sandblasting a frame

I left a message because I got the answering machine also. Might want to try a couple of times. If he can powdercoat for the same price it might be worth it?

Re: sandblasting a frame

GMC91 lol... I am the kind of person that loves to do things myself. Your idea really makes sense but every time I go home my mother is like our yard looks like a junkyard... lol... sooo as you can see I am already pushing my luck..... it is their house and they have been generous enough to give me the only bay in the garage for the winter (in exchange I make sure the driveway is ALWAYS shoveled which I always did anyway)... so for the first time I have to sub some work out... but thanks

Re: sandblasting a frame

I know what you mean by what your mom says. My mom grips me and my dad out saying our yard looks like a junk yard. I just tell her its a master peice in the making, And as for the garage, ours is a 2 bay, and me and my dad built it ourselves one summer. I just told them that since I helped build it, I can use it till I move out. But I was just given you an idea.
