Vortec heads on a 400 sbc question

I was wondering if i could run Vortec heads on my 400 sbc and what would need to be done to them to make them work? I was wondering if there were any desired cars to look for them in or casting numbers?

Re: Vortec heads on a 400 sbc question

Most 350 heads will fit just need to mark out and drill the steam holes. The combustion chamber may cause compression problems depending on piston.

Re: Vortec heads on a 400 sbc question

With 170cc intake runners, Vortecs are a bit small for a performance 400 - if you're turning past 5000 RPM or have a sizeable cam, you're leaving power on the table.

Remember that stock Vortecs are lift-limited to .475. It's possible to upgrade the springs, but the heads don't flow past .475 so it's not worth it.

Re: Vortec heads on a 400 sbc question

my cam is .442 lift so i dnt think that will be a problem. i was just wondering if they would be better than the stock heads that came on a 400. this isnt a performance motor and will be used for pulllin trailers and as a DD.

Re: Vortec heads on a 400 sbc question

The Vortecs flow better, and have a far better chamber...but I'd put the power increase with a mild cam on a 400 at maybe 20 HP/TQ or so.

If you've done everything else (intake/carb/headers/exhaust/timing/tune) then it might be worthwile...but if it was me, I'd probably pass.
