Seats in bed

I have an 86 k10 regular cab lwb and i want more seating but dont have money to buy a crew cab. i was thinking about putting a bench seat in the bed of the truck with seat belts. Has anyone done this before and is it legal in PA.i dont see why it would be illegal because its would be like a blazer but i want to make sure first. thanks.

Re: Seats in bed

Sorry I'd have to say no. I wouldn't put my friends or family back there. If anything happened you would have to live with it.

Re: Seats in bed

I would bet that it's not legal. The Feds got involved in the seatbelt laws, so I doubt that it even matter what state you are in...

Re: Seats in bed

I can't imagine it being illegal if you use legit lap belts that are securely fastened through a bed support or something underneath.

i mean blazers and bronco's were pretty much the same thing....lab belts all open in the back and all. but heck they may even be illegal these days.

You can't even legally "up-grade" to more modern seatbelts in an older vehicle. You have to stay with the "factory installed" stuff.

As far as the Blazer/Bronco/Brat/Jeep thing, they were factory installed and approved at the time, which makes them ok now....even if the factories couldn't get by with it again.

Re: Seats in bed

Look, it's this simple-
It's totally illegal, just like speeding, and a lot of people do it. .

You've gotta realize that you're putting people at risk by letting them ride back there regardless of how your seat is installed. even if you've got the think bolted down and over-engineered, you're still liable if you get in a wreck and people are injured in your little bed setup.

If you're hell bent on doing it, then bolt the thing to the actual frame, and get a sturdy seat that was meant for an off-road vehicle. Make sure everything is perfect, and then never drive above 30mph with people back there. It's still illegal, but so is speeding and out of state fireworks. Would I let my kid ride back there? hell no. Do I care if your buddies ride back there? Hell no.

Re: Seats in bed

Vehicles with seats in the back like that are made for them. They have roll bars and what not to help protect passengers in that area. Law Enforcement would use the "it did not come from the factory with it" excuse to make their judgment on it all. Same with loud exhaust, aftermarket driving lights, lighted vanity tag frames and other misc stuff.

Would they stop you just for some of that, probably not. But get stopped for something else and watch the tickets start piling up if you get Barney Fife on a bad day. I was stopped as a kid (80's or so) for "competition racing on a public roadway", ended up with that and improper tag display, malfunctioning equipment, illegal detection and monitoring device and illegal equipment.
Why I was stopped, drag racing, even though I never exceeded the speed limit of 45 nor did I break traction. I had my license plate in the back window instead of on the rear bumper, my left tag lamp was out (right worked), I had a radar detector and a scanner, I had 5% window tint.
Seems Barney just didn't like the kids that cruised his town and spent money at the drive in/gas station.

Basically they'll do what they want if they are so inclined.

Re: Seats in bed

up here it was legal to carry passengers in the back of a pickup, not anymore tho that law was changed.....my 1985 Suburban truck was factory made with no (2nd row)rear seats or belts and no third seat either.....Vacation Customs installed 2nd row (custom)seats and only lap belts......third (custom)seat (mounts above floor)had no belts........found out that welding in the factory floor (3rd seat)mounts,it would have to be inspected and possible insurance would not accept it

Want to bet? If it does not meet the state or federal regulations, they can say plenty. Just because you have seen it done, doesn't make it legal. I would pull up your states DOT site and see what laws pertain.

Re: Seats in bed

Absolutely illegal in MI to have any passengers in the bed of the truck.

Someone pulled out in front of a dump truck pulling a bulldozer on a hilly 2 lane highway. 7 dead kids later the state law was passed.

Re: Seats in bed

I had a close friend in college who lost his younger brother this way.

Several kids were in the back of a pickup, and they all were laughing and carrying on, showing off, having a blast because they were in the back of a pickup. Well, a kid fell out and that was that.

Re: Seats in bed

It used to be legal here too, but not so much now. Last I checked, it was still OK in a few counties, as long as speeds were under like 25mph or something really low.

Re: Seats in bed

safety is there for a reason. You used to see kids sleeping on the deck in the back window as well. like it was said, if something were to happen you would bare the memories for a very long time. Besides your in PA, what will you do the 9 months the weather is not so nice?

Also in Ca... seems i remember hearing that as long as the seat was bolted and there was seat belts it was ok. Not sure on the letter of the law though.

Re: Seats in bed

I know in WI you can without a seat or belts

Wisconsin Department of Motor Vehicles

May you ride in a pickup camper?

Yes, if the camper is attached, bolted, etc. to the truck.

May passengers ride in the back of a pickup truck if there's a topper on?

Yes, so long as the exhaust system extends beyond the body of the truck.

May you ride in the back of a pickup without a topper?

Yes, if you are over 16 years of age and seated in the box. It is illegal to sit on the sides. No child under the age of 16 may ride in the open cargo area of light trucks.

Here is a list of state laws, but it doesnt say anything about with a seat bolted in the bed.

In town you will have no prob (under 35MPH) but i dont know about with a seat if you could go faster or not.
