Re: installing hei

What year, make and model? all you need is a switch ignition source, no need to go to the starter.

Re: installing hei

It is a 68 long bed. Someone had already put an altenator on it so it does not have a generator/regulator. has a (i think) 77 350 with the dist. fro the orginal motor. I read that i should be able to run down and take the resister out of the wire that goes to it now. I know some had it on the fire wall but do not see a ceramic one there like i have saw on other trucks. I just figured someone else could tell me the easyway right off. I have the wire where i can run one striaght from the switch i guess but someone could tell me how to do it the better or easier way. Was planing on doing this in the morning.

Re: installing hei

Most guys just run it from the ignition unfused terminal on the fuse panel. That's a key on source and is easy to run. 12 gauge wire is what to use. Some say 10 but that's overkill. You can run a fuse inline if you are worried about it.

Re: installing hei

Just find a wire that is hot off of that terminal. I would hate to stick a wire under one end of the fuse i supose. I could look at the color codes on the wire diagram i have and see pretty easy i guess.

Re: installing hei

Vettevet was referring to the ignition unfused port on the fuse block shown in pic #1

Alternately you could eliminate the resistor wire shown in pic 2 and replace it with a new wire just depends on your skill set.

Re: installing hei

Ok the pictures help a lot. I can do about any of it but car wiring is not my normal thing. My truck has a lot of unused and cut wires already to clean up as i feel like it and will replace a few. Just a lot of stuff is easier with people like you to give a little guidence to us that this is not our specialty but an interest. Since i work in industrial machines i can do this but it does not always come out as nice as a person that does or has done it a little more regular. Thanks alot for the help.
