1987 350 block
I have a 1987 block. I want to have it built for street rod. Is there a difference from the earlier blocks? I will be using older model heads. Thanks Wayne

The difference is that the block and crank are made for a 1 piece rear main seal. That also means you will need the oil pan from the model years 86-98. The 1 piece blocks are advantagous from the standpoint that they are less likey to leak.They are also machined to accept hyd roller camshafts by having the bosses for the spyder in the lifter valley. Intake bolt pattern is different on the 4 center bolts than the early motor's
This will make you get a 87 up aftermarket intake,of you can get a late 86-87 Monte carlo ,or camaro,or caprice stock 4bbl intake as long as it has the center bolt valvecovers on it..That stock intake is very hard to find...LOL i have one on the shop wall. make sure the block has the provision for a mechanical fuel pump....... unless you plan on using an electric one?

The flywheel is different I forgot to add that, the blot circle is smaller due to the hub size on the crank. The intake will work if you drill out the center bolt to 90degrees from the older 74. But, you said you were gonna use older heads? why ? Do you already have some or does the motor have the heads. The center bolt heads flow decent with the revised chambers they have I would put them in the upper range of factory stuff excluding maybe the vortecs [of course] wnd the 'double
' hump heads and the corvette alum w/58cc. Jim |
