Re: 1983 c10 rearend
If you are so concerned with gas mileage, why did you install a TH400? That is probably the worst transmission, other than a powerglide, as far as gas mileage is concerned. With a 283, you should have been looking for a 700r4 transmission. Better 1st gear ratio for performance plus an overdrive gear for mileage.

Re: 1983 c10 rearend
agreed.
your 283 paired with a 700r4 and running some 3.42 gears would definitely give you some decent gas mileage. (for a truck)

Also, it would be easier and cheaper to play with rear tire sizes and brands in order to get the right rpm for highway cruising.
Alum wheels and brake drums would also be beneficial. |

Re: 1983 c10 rearend
Thanks for the response. Intially i was running a th-350 (until it died on me). i couldn't afford to rebuild it right now. The th-375 is my stand-by tranny, so i decided to install the th-375. i'm not certain of which gears i have now, i do know it's a posi. I'm currently running a set of 255/60r-15.
Should i change the rear gears to 3:7x or lower and/or install another tranny or keep what i have? Thanking your in advance.
