Dont buy Chinese!!!!

Anyone see the latest poison products from China? the disney glasses with 1000 times our legal lead limit!!!! Re-usable grocery bags (cloth) that have so much lead woven in items placed in the bag are unsafe?
China has given and laughed at us-- Poison pet food, toxic drywall that rather than demand action from China the US govt. gives a $8000 tax write off.
Poison toothpaste is another and the list goes on. WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!! If its made in china I dont buy it that especially goes for tires.
A local company that makes the suspension assembly for the read-rite head for disk drives has announced its moving all operations to China----over 700 jobs just locally--3300 people nationwide. The current workers make less than $13 per hour and minimal benefits and are now training the chinese that will take their jobs.If a worker refuses to train they are denied re-education and unemployment benefits REALLY!!!

Re: Dont buy Chinese!!!!

The issue that I see is.. most folks can afford the imported wears. They are cheaper and such, and folks do not recognize or take time to know of the dangers. In a penny saving economy, that is not going to change.

I try to buy better quality things for the kids. The stuff (clothes) from Pakistan etc just dont last. Have fun trying to find AFFORDABLE made in USA clothing for kids. Toys, games etc.. good luck again.

Yep it can be done, but most folks do not have the time nor money to do so.

Re: Dont buy Chinese!!!!

I saw the trend start 40 years ago. Basically shipping our manufacturing jobs over seas for cheaper labor. It started here first with shoes. At one time we had 3 shoe factories here in town with close to 800 peeps employed. They have long been gone. Now you could just make a endless list of things that were made here gone.

While I support your concept, I think you will find that its almost impossible to not buy foreign made items, especially tires. Ok, not all of them are made in China. Some are made in Korea as well.

Personally I shop for quality made products and just like most people, don't pay attention to where it is manufactured.

Re: Dont buy Chinese!!!!

I agree with the points Liz brought up, but all it takes is a little awareness on your part as a shopper.

For me, I refuse to buy fruits and vegetables from non US growers. Plus I don't buy fish from outside of the USA, since half of the places those foreign fish get caught, processed, and shipped from are cesspools IMO.

It's not hard, since the fruits and veggies in many stores have to now show a point of origin. The fish origin will be printed on the price sticker, but the bag of frozen fillets you have to search on the bag for the fine print.

I always laugh out loud when I pick up a back of "ALASKAN" ________fillet's, and you read the origin of the fish in the bag and it actually comes from some third world country.

Re: Dont buy Chinese!!!!

It's hard to find many things made in the US, but seeing the impact on our economy has made me pay more attention to it now than I used to. And of course price is a necessary consideration for most of us -- but we must also weigh the cost against quality, durability, and how each purchase affects our economy. No doubt it's a tough situation with no easy answers.

Greed and the need (want) for excess all around made this happen...US factory owners, workers and consumers. Im not sure what it will take to stop this ball from rolling.

But on a lighter note ... I love Monty Python =)

Re: Dont buy Chinese!!!!

Very true...we all know it and they all know it, but the government doesn't give a fiddlers. This has been the way of things here in the U.K for years.

Quote:
So here is the first big way we can reboot the economy: lose our recent fascination—obsession, really—with “free trade,” get back to protectionism, and impose tariffs (import taxes) on imported consumer goods as we used to do. Let’s apply the lessons that our own rich history teaches us. In other words, let’s resume the manufacture of consumer goods in the United States, protect these industries from cheap foreign labor, and bring all those jobs back home.

The High Cost of “Free Trade”

During the 1930s none of the “Asian powerhouse economies” had adopted American industrialization strategies, so when Roosevelt put money into workers’ pockets and they bought toys or clothes or radios, all of those items were made in Alabama or Connecticut or Michigan. Now they’re made in China, which experienced a “labor shortage” in 2009, causing its average wage to increase from $0.80 per hour to $1.14 and its economy to grow by more than 8 percent.2

China has been following the lead of Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea during the past half century and has become an industrial powerhouse as a result. And, ironically, each of those countries got its strategy from us: George Washington’s Treasury secretary, Alexander Hamilton, proposed it in 1791, and by 1793 most of the parts of his Report on the Subject of Manufactures had been instituted as a series of legislative and policy steps.3

And it didn’t start with Hamilton; he was just building on King Henry VII’s “Tudor Plan” of 1485, which turned England from a backwater state with raw wool as its chief export into a major developed state that produced fine clothing and other textile products from wool. He accomplished this by severely restricting the export of wool from England with high export tariffs and restricting the import of finished woolen products with high import tariffs. King Henry learned this from the Dutch. They copied the Romans. And the Romans got it from the Greeks three thousand years ago.

Nonetheless, President Obama continues to follow his predecessors—Bush Jr., Clinton, Bush Sr., and Reagan—in the religious belief that “free trade” will save us all. It’s nonsense. “Free trade” is a guaranteed ticket to the poorhouse for any nation, and the evidence is overwhelming. Even the very phrase free trade was introduced by Henry VII as something that England should encourage other countries to do while it maintained protectionism.

Since the OP mentioned the government and tax breaks and 2 admins had replied with no admonishment, I don't see an issue. Plus the article is non-partisan and more historical economics than political. I hope everybody take the time to read it. I thought it was interesting

[QUOTE=Liz;4309406] Have fun trying to find AFFORDABLE made in USA clothing for kids.

[QUOTE]

Liz, i don't think that one can be done. I worked in the garment industry for 15 years. When NAFTA was passed , EVERY clothing plant that i know of went to mexico, there are still a few clothing lines out there that say "made in usa" on the label. But, the laws that were passed along with NAFTA made it legal to ship american made cloth to mexico, cut and sew it into clothing, ship it back to the usa, and sew a made in usa label onto it and sell it as an american made product. So even if you think you are buying american you aren't. Aint it Crazy !!!
