We are losing these heroes at an alarming rate. If you know a WWII serviceman, take the time to talk to thank him and then talk to him. I've found most will share their stories, but only if asked.

Greatest generation indeed.

Re: cool video of WWII rescue

Several years ago I had an old fella as a customer. He had a big chunk of property that he never developed and the city starting slowly closing in around him. He decided to use his property for RV storage. He had a small copier out in the main area I used to service.

One day I was looking around for him and went back to his personal area where he had his own small office. I went in there and he had a ton of pics from WWII hanging on the walls. Lots of P-38 pics. I asked him about them, turns out he was a P-38 pilot during the war. I asked him about it, but he was pretty humble. We were just doing a job that needed doing. I didnt press him.

Heck of a nice guy, was weird I knew him for quite a long time before I found this out. I never would have guessed.

Re: cool video of WWII rescue

My high school science teacher was a B-17 pilot. Always started out his class with "sit down before you fall down".

He and I clicked with our chats, and shared some of his history with me.

Always use to say... "I was always shot up, but never shot down".

He loaned me a picture of his B-17 that was taken by a waist gunner of another B-17 in formation, I was thoughtful enough to have it copied before I handed it back to him.

I need to get that scanned and share it with you all, it's quite an impressive picture since it is of his B-17 dropping a load of bombs.

Never forgot that man.. Always knew him as "Mr. Murphy"

Re: cool video of WWII rescue

Very cool. My dad was a sgt in the Battle of the Bulge and St. Vith. He was with intelligence and reconnaissance. He passed away in April of 2004, he was the best man in the world to those who knew him. God bless all of them.

Re: cool video of WWII rescue

Here is one of my dad. I never really talked to him about it but I know he mentioned some things. I think he was supposed to head out on a boat but his back went out and he had to stay behind, and I think he said something about that boat sinking or something like that. If he was on that boat I would not be typing this today.

Re: cool video of WWII rescue

How wonderful he got to be reunited with film he didn't know existed, six decades later while he's still around to enjoy it. Thanks for sharing the link.
