Real simple question. What the difference between modern day liquid propane for a forktruck and the lp for a gas grill? Posted via Mobile Device

Re: propane and propane accessories

I'm not an expert, but as for the liquid propane itself there should not be any difference. I use a buffer at work and it is run on LP. I get it filled at a local U-Haul place and they fill tanks for whatever a customer brings in. I did however find out that a regular propane tank for a grill or whatever will not "hook up" to the buffer because the tanks use a different type of fitting.

Hope this helps.

Re: propane and propane accessories

my dad put together some sort of an adapter so that we can fill our grill tank out of the bigger tanks we have for our house, shop, or grain dryers.

Re: propane and propane accessories

This is what I was told by our propane guy when asking about using 100 lb. forklift tanks for a bbq grill.
While it is the same gas in the tank, the valving is different for the two applications.
A forklift takes liquid propane from the tank and mixes it into a combustible vapor in the carbuerator, much like any internal combustion engine.
A grill uses a different valve which mixes the liquid with air at the valve
to form a usable vapor.
DISCLAIMER:::::::
I'm by no means an expert. Please don't do anything stupid and blow your gas off!But he did say he would sell me a 100 lb tank with the corect
valve for my bbq along with a gauge. He said it was a vapor
withdrawal versus a liquid withdrawal system.
I'm seriously thinking about it,
because I could grill for about 2 years on that thing and he fills
tanks cheaper than the gas-station swap-a-tank deal.

Re: propane and propane accessories

The only difference is "liquid vs gas". The carburetor of the forklift needs the liquid to mix with the in-coming air. The gas-grill burns the vapor off of the liquid.
Several years ago I changed the threaded fitting on an aluminum tank from a forklift, thinking that it would eliminate the need for multiple tanks on long weekend trips to the racetrack....but didn't work very well. The valve would freeze-up after running for a little while. Then a fellow camper/friend from across the way told me about the "dip-tube" that allows the tank to dispense only in liquid form. The tank was designed to be mounted horizontally with the valve's fitting pointed downward, simply laying the tank on it's side with the hose fitting pointed "up" cured the problem. It has worked flawlessly ever since.
