Updates on open heart surgery.

Well.. Its been a while since I updated on what was going on after my Aug 2nd heart surgery. Its been a wild ride. I was hospitalized twice after the surgery because my heart rate was going like gangbusters. They had to plug me up to an IV and give me some "slowdown" juice.

Things never got better after the second hospitalization. My heart rate was bumpy at best. It seemed everything I did caused my heart to skip beats, have extra beats or go way too fast. I was exhausted all the time and had a hard time breathing sometimes.

I had some doctors appointments coming up so I figured I'd wait and see what they had to say before doing anything. I wanted to avoid the hospitalization fees of $200 for the first day and $100 for everyday afterwards that I had already added to my bill.

The last part of September got to be too much. In spite of the doctors appointments, I could not go on any longer. I was debating if getting up off the couch and going to the bathroom was actually worth trying to move because it was so hard to breathe.

My niece took me to the ER (God Bless Her) and stayed with me while the hospital staff determined what was wrong. They gave me a breathing treatment and I felt a LOT better. I figured "hey thats all I needed, I can go home!" Ooops.. not so fast sparky... apparently My xrays didn't look so good.

Turns out I had fluid on my heart AND in my lungs. I was in heart failure and didn't know it. They ended up taking almost 2 liters of fluid off my heart and 2.2 liters off of my lungs.

I was dang near dead and had no clue it was anything that bad.

I watched them stick a huge needle in my chest and draw off the fluid from my heart. It was kinda cool to watch. I never really felt anything but a little
"bee sting" when they first stuck the needle in.

Taking it off my lungs was a little bit tougher but not too bad. When they made the final shove of the needle into my right lung it felt like somebody briefly knocked the air out of me.

My right lung had collapsed. I had to cough for it to re-inflate itself.. and it did. They said I would feel like I had pneumonia for a few days and I did but it wasn't too bad.

Ends up.. I feel better than I have felt in YEARS. Seems this water on my lungs must have been there for a long time and nobody caught it. I had so much gas I was burping I didn't take it too seriously. I thought it was nothing more than that, Gas.

I actually have energy now. I am going to do my best to get back into shape and take better care of myself.

The best thing about this? In a weeks time, I lost 43 pounds. All of it in fluid I was retaining. Scary but glad I know to watch it when I feel like I have a cold and can't breathe.

Wow Bill, 43 pounds is a lot of fluid, you must have been pushing 5 gallons. You are a lucky man, and very happy to hear you are feeling better.

Re: Updates on open heart surgery.

Glad your gettting through everything. Complications after the surgery can be just as painful and dangerous as the surgery itself.

I had open heart 11 years ago (Aortic graft and valve replacement) luckily I had no complications, but it took months to regain any strength and near a year to get back to normal. Dont rush things, but do those exercises they give you, they do help with the recovery even if they feel liek a PITA

Good lord Bill, what were you thinking? Man you gotta watch yourself closer than that. Glad to hear they found the issue. Just curios, does it whistle when you burp?
