Rusted up wheels, what to do?
Hey guys, I have a set of orginal wheels that came off my '49 that I was going to throw some old tires on just so I can move it around. I took the old tires and tubes off the truck and found that two of the wheels are rusted out around where the valves stem goes. I had plan on not using a tube and just putting some new valve stems in. Would it be possible to still use tubes? And would it be a problem to run tubes inside a supposed "tubeless" tire? And what is the bolt pattern on these older trucks? Is there another rim I could possibly use? I've heard that later model 6 lug Toyota's have the same lug pattern. Is this true? Thanks for any help.
Here's a close up of one of the rims. ![]()

I would say no those rims! Please do not chance them. I used my stock 2007 Tacoma wheels to move my 53 around with. They fit perfect.

Re: Rusted up wheels, what to do?
Please don't run those rims. You should beable to run almost any 6 lug chevy rim. Those came on 4x4 trucks alot. Here is a pic of my truck with a set of late 80's rims. If you see a set like this at the junk yard they'd work.
![]() Also, as far as tubes in tubless tires. Some guys do it with out a problem but manufaturers don't reccomend it because of the friction between the tube and tube tire. This has been a debate over on stovebolt.com. Those original rims require tubes anyway so you'd need tubes for them. There is a company that makes new rims that look exactly like the original ones if you want that look in a rim that can run tubeless. |

Re: Rusted up wheels, what to do?
Thanks guys. Using these rims are definitely out of the question. Upon further inspection, the bottom of these rims are rusted really bad from sitting on the ground for the past 35 years. I have a buddy that has some 6 lug Yota wheels he said he would let me use just to roll it around on.

Lol, it's all there but it's definitely not that pretty. That's one of the reasons why I'm doing a chassis swap.
