Rear end question
Looks like the rear end of my 64 has been changed at some point. I noticed that there is a different style bar mount along with the 64 mount that was welded on to the the rear end.
I am planning a 5 lug swap and I need to figure out if I have to reference a different year rear end when I order parts. It is a 4:11 posi unit. Any Help would be appreciated. I plan to order axles. Truck has been sitting for 18 years. Moser axles the way to go? Would you get into the rear end and check anything? Obviously I may need to pull axles an verify length and splines? |

Re: Rear end question
That rear end is a '65 to '70 vintage. The panhard bar mount is the original style for the '63 and '64 C10 trucks, as well as the C20's up thru '72. There is a slight possibility that, that rear end could be the late 1970 version which has a 63.5 WMS to WMS (Wheel Mounting Surface) versus the earlier 62" WMS to WMS measurement. You should probably measure what you have so you will know just what length conversion axles you need to purchase. The 62" wide differentials use the 30.5" long axles and the 63.5" differentials use 31.25" long axles. You should have 30 spline axles, but it wouldn't hurt to verify that. You will obviously have to pull the cover to remove the pin and change the axles, so an oil change amd a new cover gasket would be assumed. With a posi differential it is adviseable to add a bottle of GM posi/limited slip additive to the oil.
Yes Moser is a good quality axle. There are others available, but that depends on your budget and just how much power you will be putting to those axles.
