Power Locks not working
I just got my 96 on the road and have some problems of course. This is the newest truck I've ever owned.
My power locks are dead, both switches both sides. Where do I start to troubleshoot this? |

Re: Power Locks not working
Assuming no blown fuses, there's a black relay underneath in about the centre of the dash (I think it says Potter and Brumfield). See if that clicks when you push the buttons. Could be the buttons too but unlikely that both are bad.

Re: Power Locks not working
I was also thinking that if the driver's side switch failed, it make both switches not work. I think I ran into this when I install my keyless entry.

Re: Power Locks not working
I think I may start with the switch. If that relay is located anywhere close to where it was on my 80 it will be lots of fun finding and changing it. Unless GM made removal able AC vent and but it right there? Now that would be nice.

Re: Power Locks not working
When I changed out my driver's door lock switch, then both doors locked again.
$20 (LMC Parts) for each door switch. Use a putty knife to remove the switch, & just plug in the new one. |

Re: Power Locks not working
On m '98 Suburban, the relay was almost in the centre of the dash if you went up towards the radio. It's clipped to something else as I recall. My locks would sometime stay energized (in the unlock position), draining the battery.

Re: Power Locks not working
the door switches are simple rocker switches. They can get stuck in a position, (inside, & behind the decorative outer switch cover your finger touches)...
Draining the battery. My window switch used to be a "one-touch" up. Just touch the switch, remove your finger & the window would raise all the way up with no pressure from your finger. |

Re: Power Locks not working
Check the fuses in the left IP fuse block on left side of dash. I am a gm tech and have seen the locks quit on these when the cig lighter fuse is blown. I never figured out how that ckt related to the locks, but it would be easy for you to check. I think it was labeled cig. Just check all the fuses and see if this helps.

Re: Power Locks not working
My passenger door window & lock didn't work until I replaced those switches. Even the driver's side switch, for the passenger door didn't work until the passenger switches were changed.
(Thanks LMC for the parts) |

Re: Power Locks not working
My cig lighter fuse was blown and was keeping the door locks from working. I had to take it to a dealer because I couldn't figure it out. I would have never dreamed it was hooked up to the cig lighter fuse!
