HillBilly 53 build
I have been watching everybody elses builds on here and thought I would finally post some pics from mine. I drove to alabama to pick up this 53 for $800 from a friend. I have put a mustang II under the front and have started on the rear suspension. Drivetrain will be a ~450Hp 350 with a T56 6 speed and a 8.8 rearend from a f*** Exploder.

Re: HillBilly 53 build
Thanks guys, Yeah that flat tire made for a good push to get it in the garage. The rearend that was under it, connected to that flat tire, was a 12 bolt out of a 79 chevy 2wd. So it was too wide and had to come out anyway.

Re: HillBilly 53 build
Thought I would finally show a little progress. I have C-notched the frame using a peice of 4" pipe and have finally settled on the setup for the rear suspension. I still havent welded up brackets for bags or shocks but will throw some pics up of that when I get it done.

Re: HillBilly 53 build
lookin good hillbilly. are you planning on putting your fuel tank in the rear frame section behind your axle? the reason im asking is i read on here i cant remeber what thread it was but the guy had done all the math to figure this out, he said when you c-notch the frame like you did you lose like 60 to 75% of the strength in the frame behind the notch. i wish i could remember what thread it was cause i seen alot of guys do the notch like that. anyways just thought i would throw that in. Charleston Vw. Hey i got kin that live in barberville and my mom was born in charlseton. know any Tocks or McCoys ??

![]() ![]() I'm 225 lbs and can stand on that tank with zero flex on the frame. It flexed like a SOB before the shock tower was welded in though. |

Re: HillBilly 53 build
Ya Ghost i totally agree. when the guy explained it he even showed diagrams of braceing it. i believe the way you welded that plate your crossbars are welded to strengthen yours up alot. dang i wish i could remember that thread it was in. like i said i seen a ton of people do c-notchs that way. i think with braceing it would work great.

Re: HillBilly 53 build
Troy, I have heard of a couple McCoys but none ring a bell. I do plan on putting a tank back there, But I am also going to build a frame out of 2"x2" for what I am doing for the bed floor, which will also give it a little backbone. Really with the 3/16th stiffners I welded in the center of the frame before I boxed it, I wouldnt worry about it. I can put a lot of weight on it, even supported at the rear of the frame and it doesnt flex.
Thanks I am going to try to build my motor mounts this weekend and put them in, but I may run over to my buddys to help get him started on his 46 chevy truck. |
