The Fish From Hell

Never known anyone who has caught one of these fish ,,have you?

The first time a snakehead was seen in Maryland was when an angler caught an 18-inch specimen in 2002 in Crofton Pond, 20 miles north of Washington, D.C. Since then, the population has grown and they've been caught in dozens of bodies of water, including the Potomac River and tributaries.

The fish are hardy enough to survive up to four days on land, and can migrate up to a quarter mile between bodies of water by wriggling on their fins. National Geographic has dubbed the snakehead "fishzilla," and it is also frequently referred to as the "fish from hell." They can grow to more than 2 feet long and have been found in at least seven states.

Just have to ask..did you ever hear of the law you have in Kansas that says it is against the law to catch fish with bare hands? You might not want to catch this fish in any state bare handed..LOL

Re: The Fish From Hell

I have never felt the need to "noodle" bare hand fish,so I am unaware of such laws. I fish with a rod and reel.

Is there really a law in Kansas that says you can't fish bare handed? That's funny.

If I was trying to catch that fish, I'd use a shotgun.

Re: The Fish From Hell

"Noodling" is not for the faint of heart. It's a macho type of thing.I just can't see crawling in a hole underwater to see if that's a fish or a cottonmouth in there. The OK guys probably have seen this but many may not.A lot of "Noodlers" hang the heads from a tree.I've seen up to 15 in wide catfish heads hung from trees. As far as a snakefish, eating it would kinda be like the first person ever to eat a crawfish.Hmmmm this thing is just so dang ugly it's got to be tasty.....

We always called catching fish by hand "hoggin'". I got bit by a snapping turtle when we were hoggin' fish once. He was under some tree roots below a reservoir spillway. If that fish is the real deal I would have a lot of respect for that...

Yeah,, My relatives in Arkansas call it Hoggin also..I worked with a ol feller from Oklahoma and he told me that when he was a young man that he and others would dive down deep in the river and gaff them Cat fish with a gaff hook..
He said a black kid had a leather shoe string fastened to the gaff hook handle and it cost him his life.. As the catfish swam deeper until it drowned the kid because he couldnt get loose from it.. I believe this story as I respected this old man as a truthful guy..

Re: The Fish From Hell

It is illegal to hand fish in Kansas Scott, but it never stopped a few people I know. I also prefer the rod and reel.
Maybe those ugly little fish could eat the zebra muscles that are starting to be found everywhere, or maybe they could eat those stupid jumping carp.

IIRC I saw an article the other day that said the DNR was having some sort of contest with a $200 prize for the biggest one caught and killed. Just had to take a picture and measurements and post on their site.

You might be right about a contest, I mentioned this story about this fish to a guy I know and he said that there is a bounty on them somewhere he thought to help get rid of them,, he said that they figure they got here in the USA from Asia by way of the fish market bussiness.

Re: The Fish From Hell

In maryland you have to kill a snakehead if you catch one.
http://dnr.maryland.gov/fisheries/ne...sp?story_id=49
They are very tasting unlike some other evasive spicies ie. carp.

Noodling is against teh law in MO to but there are several people that do it surprising how many do it at night. I know a guy that got bit by a beaver doing it a long time ago. That snake fish would tear your arm up worse than a blue cat spinning around on it

It's not the fish, beavers, turtles or any living thing in the rivers , It's just the nasty river water that's enough to keep me out.
