Brake Booster

What are the typical signs of a booster going bad?

Right now when I press the brake pedal I've been hearing a swoosh sound for a while. Friday I noticed that the peddle was not consistent. Hwy speed coming to a regular slow down brakes seem fine. Bumper to bumper press the brakes once it was OK but if you had to press them again quickly the brakes were rock hard.
