swapping to a cs144
Okay so I've read the guides and i've even suggested it to others before, but I haven't personally done it yet. What im wondering is it really that simple to switch over from a 10si? I plan on getting a remanufacterd 140 amp cs144 alternator off a buick roadmaster off rockauto.com before i spend the 100$ on the alternator Im curious if its really that simple and all I need to do is mount it and use that little harness/adpater, another concern is do the pulleys swap out? Im not using a serpentine belt in my truck and im pretty sure the cs144 is set up for a serpentine system.

Re: swapping to a cs144
Yes it is that simple, if you already have the SI alternator conversion then the no. 1 wire on the SI alternator will go to the L terminal on the CS 144 and the no. 2 wire on the SI alternator will go to the S terminal on the CS alternator. Just make sure the brown wire to the L terminal has a resistor in series with the L terminal. If you by the harness it should be installed in the harness.
I understand some of the newer CS alternators do not have the S terminal in the plug in so that won't be needed. The pulleys are just a swap so you can remove the alternator serpentine pulley and install the V-belt pulley. I use gloves or a rag and my impact gun with a 15/16 ths socket and the nut pops right off. Here's a play by play. -----------http://temp.corvetteforum.net/c3/zman//Electronics/Alternator01.htm For some reason the site does not show as a direct link. Just copy and paste into google search and it will be the first thread on the page.

Re: swapping to a cs144
Wow I just swapped over literally took 5 minutes, just had to buy a m10x50 bolt for the top bracket other then that easy as hell. Spending 100$ on a remanned 140amp cs144 is a lot better then spending 150+ for a good si alternator. Only thing that sucks is in waiting for my conversation harness to come into AutoZone. Part number is 792 for the delco harness if you have a volt gauge

Re: swapping to a cs144
They probably can't find the part number for that "conversation harness" so they're just standing around talking about it. J/K lol.

Re: swapping to a cs144
Wow this thing maintains a steady 14.4v at idle!

Re: swapping to a cs144
Very nice. I actually cut up and re-wired my stock harness to clean everything up, and hard-wired my CS series plug into my harness. My CS144 was a used unit from the u-pull, paid $30 with a month warranty. Tested good at the parts store, so I slapped it on.
How is it working out with the v-belts? Funny you say that, none of the local stores had a conversion harness or any clue what I was talking about. That includes Napa AND the GM dealer. So I decided to save the $20, picked up some resistors, and hard-wired it to my harness. |
