Yes, they originally had a thin gasket between the cab and the drip rail retainer. The retainer is the part that screws onto the cab and then the bright stainless trim caps off the retainer.

I did the same on Dad's 77. Used some thin double-sided trim/emblem mounting tape. The original stuff seemed to be pretty similar material except it was sticky only on one side.

well i guess i will make some....i suspect that the gaskets came attached to the retainer from gm and maybe would have to buy retainers to get gasket.?????

So..The driprail does come apart to alow you to get to the screws??
Any pictures?

I would just use an open end wrench and leave them together.
I have seen them with phillips screws and with hex screws. Either way you can get them off the truck without separating the chrome off them.
