Lost Dutchman Mine, Superstition Mtns

Having just gotten to feeling human again after a 3 day bout with the flu bug I got bored (again) and for some reason Googled the story of the Lost Dutchman Mine. Man, that is some fascinating reading. Spent nearly two hours or more going from story to story. Starts way back in the early 1800's or before depending on which story you are reading. Missing people, bodies found beheaded, skeletal remains, the whole bit. Fact is just last month according to FoxNews (Nov. 2012) the remains of a man missing three years was found purely by accident by some hikers in the area. He had told his parents and friends he was going to search for the mine. I'm sure any one from Arizona knows of the mine and its's legend but for any one who likes such tales of lost treasure it does make for some time consuming reading. Since 1984 the land of the Superstitions is listed as a National Park/Wildlife Wilderness so technichaly any thing within the boundries is the property of the US Government. Fascinating reading to be sure. Also something to do when recovering from the flu bug.

I saw a report on the lost mine. Lots of interviews with prospectors and guides. Some odd ideas about where and how to find said mine. The one that stood out the most was a scraggly old man at a camp fire. Said he would kill anyone that found it. That was HIS mine! I think the reporter wet his pants a little.

haven't heard of it, but it sounds like something I'd be into. I love stories of old shipwrecks and mysterious stuff like that. The Weird 'insert your state here' books are pretty cool to flip through if you have the time.

Re: Lost Dutchman Mine, Superstition Mtns

There were a couple of fools from here in Utah a couple of years ago that went out looking for some lost mine in AZ, could have been that one, but I can't remember for sure. I don't think they have found their bodys yet. They just walked out into the desert with no expierence or supplies and disapered. Heck, maybe they found it and are just hanging out at some tropical beach somewhere

There is the 'Lost Rhoades Mine' allegedly up in the hills not too far from where I live. It's all documented and the gold from it helped the Mormon Pioneers survive and is the base of the LDS Church's great wealth, but no one knows where it is, and the Church ain't saying.
