Noises from Steering Wheel

Anytime I turn the steering wheel for a sharp turn, I hear a grinding noise that is coming from right under the steering wheel cap. When taking gradual turns there is no noise but any 90 degree turns........like at an intersection.......causes the noise. Tonight, it began to make a squealing noise which made me decide to do something about it. Any ideas what in particular it most likely is? I have no idea other than maybe a bearing of some type but I've never tore into a steering column so I have no idea what to expect. Any help appreciated. Thanks.
