Indiana Jones and the Manspace of Doom (NOT)

Every so often, well quite regularly, I look into Ashley115s's thread linked below and just shake my head in amazement at how he has been able to build these structures on funds most people eat and drink out on an evening out, in stead he has built a family home with much love and ingenuity.

I admire this sort of build.

He started this thread with a Recycled Double garage and a planned gamesroom.

Just take a look and be impressed.

Anyway, Ashley has been collecting some number plates on my behalf as a sideline to his job.

So with the basics of his games room coming together now, I was thinking of making him something to go with his "Man Cave"
So I gave him a call and discussed my idea with him.... managed to sell him on the idea.

I wanted to turn him a pair of candle sticks in the shape of "Indiana Jones" torches.

So I went to my green firewood stash and pulled out a couple of large logs.......

Cut the one I chose into two 20 inch or 500mm logs.

The idea was to leave about 4 inches with the bark, and then taper the rest down and be creative in the process.

Centred.....

Once mounted on the lathe and centered etc, I switched it on..... BRRRRRRR it vibrated at bazillions of RPM's.

Introduced my Skew chisel to start shaping it..... KAAAA-THUNK.... it flew over the shed and hit the bandsaw behind me.

This meant I needed to go to plan B.....

Scavenge-o-Meter set to 10

Pallet wood pile no1......

Threw up this gem

Retrieved it to the shed, only to realize it was significantly handicapped.

Loads and loads of nails...... BURGER !!

Put that away, and carried on scavenging.......

Two houses down I found these posts, slightly thin and very light, so probably rotten.

Scavenge-o-Meter set to Warp Power......

I found this in the garden, bit of railway sleeper offcut I found a few years ago..... too thin.

Then found another piece, ugly, but long enough.

Toppped and tailed it to get it to 500mm, then split it to get a pair of logs.

Centered on the lathe, and also set the tool rest etc as it was a tight fit.

The minute I started the lathe the wood dismounted and told me in no uncertain terms it was not going to be Indiana Jones' Torch..... BURGER ... AGAIN !!!!!

So now I have to turn on my Turbo Scavenging mind to find some decent wood to turn some fiery flaming Indy torches for Ashleys Manspace front doors.

So for now, this the only torch I have to offer.

Roll on tomorrow.

More progress to report once I find the right lump of wood.
