np205 outputs questions
I have a 71 and 84 np205s. Are the rear output splines the same between the two? For the front the 71 has a yoke the 84 has a flange, are they interchangeable? I have a 71 front driveshaft and an 86 front driveshaft that will need to be shortened to work with the flange. Thanks
Jim

I kept the drivetrain. Body/bad and chassis are gone. 1981 K30, 350/465/205 dana 60 and dually 14 bolt. Has a G80, and a flat bed. Going to replace the flat bed. 1985 K20, 350/400/208 10 bolt and SF 14 bolt. I wonder where I can find some 1 tons. Hmmmmm ![]() |

Re: np205 outputs questions
rear are all 32 spline.
front on the 71 is probably 10 spline. front on the 84 is 30 spline. entire front output shafts interchange if necessary. |

Re: np205 outputs questions
Thanks, I will need to pull the yoke off the 71 (1/2 ton) and put on the 84 (3/4 ton). I am using a 1/2 ton driveshaft and do not want to find a hybrid joint for the rear.
Jim

Re: np205 outputs questions
Are the front shaft spline counts the same? Maybe you can mix and match. Might lead to a balance problem, but the front isn't spinning at high speed if you have locking hubs.
Maybe a crazy idea... |

Re: np205 outputs questions
As obijuan said, the spline counts are different so you would have to swap out the front out-put shaft in order to swap the yokes. I have done this to a few np205's but in reverse, I like the flange better than the yoke style.
And it's best to do the swap with the T/C's on a bench, I have done this in the truck but it's VERY difficult !!!!! Gary

Re: np205 outputs questions
The front is fine. I am having the front driveshaft shorten. The rear is what I need to swap, I have a 1/2 ton yoke and a 3/4 ton yoke, the driveshaft is 1/2 ton. I want to pull the big yoke off and put the 1/2 ton yoke on.

Re: np205 outputs questions
OK, I thought you were talking about the front. I believe the rear has the same spline count. If not you could swap out the whole out put assembly.
I did that with a later model np205 from a blazer, they came with a slip-joint. Gary

Re: np205 outputs questions
Actually I was speaking of the front driveshaft splines, not the output of the TC.

Re: np205 outputs questions
Well, looks like I'm going to put the 1350 yoke back on since I found the hybrid joint to use. Oh well, thanks for the input I was glad to see things were kept the same over 15 years.
