Computer Removal - '85 Short/Wide - Newbie Alert
Folks,
This is my first post here, so don't beat me up too bad if my posts come out kinda lame - I'm still early in my learning curve!! I've got an '85 C10 short/wide, 2wd. It's registered here in VA as an antique, so no mechanical or emissions inspections any more. The truck already has Hooker headers into a true dual exhaust, and the intake/carb is "old school", not computer driven. From what I can tell, the only thing still running off of the computer is the HEI distributor, with it's 4 lead connector. I've scored a brand new conventional HEI that I want to swap in, so I also have the correct lead for it to connect to a 12 volt source. My question is, once the HEI is switched out, is there any reason to leave the computer in place, or can I neatly remove it, and terminate the power lead to it? Jerry |

Do you mean the electronic spark control module? It only controls those two things so you should be good go

The 85 did not come with a computer.

Re: Computer Removal - '85 Short/Wide - Newbie Alert
Thanks for the replies, all.
I've never "de-smogged" an '80's era vehicle, so I had no idea what might or might not be there. I just had visions of disconnecting things, then find out I'd have a no-start situation. Eyegore: The weather should be better tomorrow and Saturday, so I hope to get some current pictures. I've lowered the truck, and changed out the wheels and tires already. Once I get them, I'll do a new guy post... Jerry |

Yes they did. The ECM controlled the feedback carburetor and electronic spark control. ECM’s actually first appeared in light trucks in 1981.
![]() Jerry, If your truck is already running a non-computerized carburetor (feedback carburetor) and a HEI distributor with vacuum advance the computer is already disconnected. You could just leave it there or remove it. I personally would leave it there. Getting the ECM out of square body trucks is quite a job as it is tucked way up above the HVAC unit behind the glove box. Even with the glove box removed it is still a MOFO to get out. I would just leave it and terminate the wires at the firewall.

Bumping an old thread. What all is required to remove the smog equipment from a 86 custom deluxe? TIA.
