checking timing with vacuum ad.?

Just wondering, if you set your timing without vacuum advance the proper way and then note what the numbers are on the timing light[say 24 degrees] with the vacuum hooked up, then say you were to go on a road trip later this year and wanted to do a quick check on things, would this still be a proper timing check.

Re: checking timing with vacuum ad.?

Guess I over thought that.If I know my timing is at say 24 deg. with vacuum hooked up can I just hook up the timing light and check for 24 deg. with a dial back timing light and good to go.Just thought when I go on a road trip later I can give it a quick check as it is a new motor and want to make sure everybody is where it is supposed to be.

You could but it likely won't be accurate.
Things change over time.
To be accurate, just do it the right way.
What are you running for initial timing?
And where are you travelling to?

Re: checking timing with vacuum ad.?

Just wondering where you were going cause if you went down to sea level like in Lotus Land (aka Vancouver) you might be over timed.

Re: checking timing with vacuum ad.?

Geezer, brings up a good point (as usual), on elevation? Timing needs & & jetting changes , with elevation In my spot in Illinois, & am @ 570 ft above sea level, & the state/states are pretty flat. That said, in my spot, I tend to shoot for 12-14 intial, in around 3000....but focus more on the total. I like around 34 degrees on a sb Chev, for total. When I hit the right spot, I add the can. Another 8-10 degrees , usually hits the spot (22-24 @ idle, with the can hooked up), usually fits on pump fuel? The ? that you ask , about checking the timing, with the vac can hooked..... IMHO, not the way to go Any air leaks in the system, or carb issues will show you different on the lite? Total timing, is in my thoughts more important (can un hooked & plugged @ 2800-3000 rpms)....the rest of the system tunes separately.....come on back Geezer, it could be an interesting discussion, on the different spots on our map! shorthorn
