Door Hinge Pins
I have taken the doors off but left the hinges on the truck. I shot them with penetrant to to knock them out, they won't budge. Does any have any tips they can offer up? I really don't want to use flame heat on them because of the paint.

Re: Door Hinge Pins
Well, Bill first off welcome to the site, what about taking them off and then placing them upside down on a vice to whack on the pins. Holding them upside down with the vice open to clear the pin worked for me on some really rusted and frozen up pins. After taking them apart I plan on putting mine in the drum roller media cleaner thing.

Re: Door Hinge Pins
Thanks Hugger, I know, I was hoping to knock them out on the truck but it's (no go Joe).
I'll pull them off change the bushings & pins and sand blast them and repaint when done, Thanks again..... Bill |

Re: Door Hinge Pins
You won't be able to remove the pins while the hinges are still on the truck. Heat will help, and using something to press them out initially, then following with a center punch works well for me.

Re: Door Hinge Pins
I recently replaced the hinge pins on my '71. I removed the hinges and used a bench top press. Even with the press, it took a lot of "force" to get the pins moving. No way a punch and hammer was going to do anything other than mushrooming the pins and making it more difficult. BTW, my pins were not overly rusty.
Penetrating fluid will help keep the pins moving easier once you get them moving. I cut the heads off the pins so I could back the hinge (pin) up with a socket. The hinges are shaped irregularly, so they don't sit nice between two steel blocks on the press table. Made things much easier. |
