Dana 60 Ratios
What ratios was the Dana 60 available in for 67-72? Was 3.73:1? I was under the impression GM offered 3.54,4.11.and 4.56. Does anyone know different? I could check my parts catalog, but thought I'd check here.

Re: Dana 60 Ratios
I just pulled the Dana out from my 67 3/4 ton and according to the SPID in the glovebox it is a 4.10? It is an eight lug in good shape but I have no use for it...

Re: Dana 60 Ratios
Yeah, they called it a 4.10,but it's actually a 4.11...close enough. The front Dana 44 on a K-model is actually a 4.09. The Dana and Corporate ratios run a bit different, due to different designs, but for all practical purposes are the same ratios. When ypu look in the parts catalog you see both 4.56:1 w/Dana and 4.57:1. you see the same with 4.11w/Dana and 4.10. I always wondered why they'd make two ring & pinions only 1/100th different, then realized it said w/Dana or not.
Dana 60-4.10/HO52-4.10 Dana 60-4.56/HO52-4.57 But,the main question here is did GM offer 3.73 in K/20s with Dana 60s in 67-72?

I bought one a while back that is supposed to be a 3.54. I think it is out of a Suburban. Coil spring. LockDoc

Re: Dana 60 Ratios
No, GM did not offer the 3.73 ratio in the Dana 60 C20 series. However, Ford did offer the 3.73 ratio in the Dana 60 F 250 during the 68-72 era.( I guess it was one of Fords "better ideas" ).

Re: Dana 60 Ratios
Tim, The higher gears you seek will have to come from another brand or aftermarket. But if you can live with 3.54s, then a Longhorn rear with a matching set of aftermakets for the front should do the trick. If I remember correctly Longhorns and 4x4 share the same frame/spring perch width.

Re: Dana 60 Ratios
Thanks for confirming that. I know you are book-wise and trust what you say, when it comes to factory specs. I like that motto and have never argued it. My take on it has always been,"Ford has the better idea and GM has the best ideas"

Re: Dana 60 Ratios
Is that chart accurate? I have a 68 Longhorn with a 292, originally a four speed, and a dana 60 with 3.54s.

Re: Dana 60 Ratios
Yes, its accurate. Page above is from the '71 Data Book, but it pretty much sums up the info for a K20. Now your truck per the '68 Longhorn specs. would have the 4.57 as base standard. With the M20/292 the ratio gets bumped to the 4.10. An optional ratio is not listed for that powertrain either. The 3.54s were only seen in BB trucks. I'd be suprised if yours has factory 3.54s (as built) with a M20/292. You stated "My truck says 3.54." Where does it state this? I'm thinking that your truck has had an axle/ratio swap somewhere along the line. Below is the '68 Powertrain Chart and a Dana axle ID chart.

I am happy to see these gear ratios, since I just picked up a '72 K20 D60 and D44 axle set.
Thanks for the info!

Re: Dana 60 Ratios
Tag is a good start, but it is still likely a transplant. Does the SPID give any information? If you feel like pursuing this down the axle numbers stamped into the tubes will tell us most of the story. Bet the truck does pretty good lightly loaded and runs down the freeway at a good clip with 3.54s.

Re: Dana 60 Ratios
Yeah, as far as I know I am the fourth owner and the truck has had some work done to it over the years, so I wouldn't be surprised if it has been swapped out.

Re: Dana 60 Ratios
just spitballin here - but a few questions:
1) I'm assumin one can't simply slap a 3.54 R&P on a carrier that previously held 4.10s (or 4.56s), correct? - the whole carrier would need to be swapped, yes? 2) Aftermarket was mentioned above - what is the lowest numerical R&P set that will fit on a 4-series carrier, 4.10? Who are some of the aftermarket companies that might carry some of this stuff? Currie? etc. 3) Is there an aftermarket means of making one's 4.10 D60 a 3.73? |

Re: Dana 60 Ratios
You are going to need to research this some. If you go to an O/D you might want to keep the gears or change them only a little.

If you have 4.56's, you can run 4.88's, 5.13's, and a fair bit lower. It is also possible to swap in 3.07's if needed. |

Re: Dana 60 Ratios
I agree - with 2004R may be a moot point. I wouldn't go with only the gear swap (to a 3.54 for example) because then my lil 350 might be pretty stressed with a camper. But I'm lookin down the road a bit - the 2004R conv will come first and that gets me awful close to ideal. But a 3.73 with the 2004R is just about perfect - roughly similar 1st gear final ration and still big o/d on the top end. 3.54 with 2004R is proabably too high of a gear for the highway - rpms would drop too much (when used in conjunction with a 2004R) - but a 3.73 might be just about right.
I have a feeling it would be cost-prohibitive to add in a 3.73 for the good I'd get out of it (AFTER a 2004R swap), but just exploring the options, if there are any, for now. OH! And thanks for the manual, that is awesome Tim! Last edited by jocko; 11-03-2012 at 11:25 PM. |

Re: Dana 60 Ratios
Did some playing at Randy's. Good news is that the split is 4.10 up that you have and need for less reduction or 4.56 down for more reduction.

Re: Dana 60 Ratios
If you did a stock axle swap from another C/20 the choices are 3.54, 4.10 and 4.56. Don't forget tire size when you run numbers.

Re: Dana 60 Ratios
so, if I read the link you sent correctly - THIS would bolt onto my current carrier: http://www.ringpinion.com/b2c/Produc...nd_Pinion_Sets
And voila, it's a 3.73 now.... Concur, 3.73 and 4.10 can bolt to same carrier. Very interesting..... Glad my truck came with a D60 in case I ever get around to doin this. |

Re: Dana 60 Ratios
Its what about a 10% change? You could fake that with a taller set of used tires and see if you like it first. A LSD of some sort would be nice to have as well.

Re: Dana 60 Ratios
4.10 with a 2004R with 265/75/16 (31.7")tires =
1893 rpm @ 65 2184 rpm @ 75 3.73 with a 2004R with 265/75/16 (31.7") tires = 1722 rpm @ 65 1987 rpm @ 75 so about a 150-200 rpm drop at speed. Not a big deal. And probably not worth the cost, that's why if I do it, it will be waaaaay down the road and after I hit the lotto. 2004R is the best bang for the buck and pretty much eliminates the need for the 3.73. Just the 2004R alone drops 65 mph rpm by almost 1000 rpm/75 mph rpm by about 1100. Just the 3.73 alone would help a bit, but not enough to warrant the cost in my mind - if wanting most bang for the buck, 2004R is the way to go for highway cruising (or a 700R4 for folks that like it, slightly (unnoticeable) higher rpm in o/d than a 2004R). BUT, the "ideal" setup would be a 3.73 with the 2004R in my book - better 1st gear final drive ratio than the 2004R/4.10 combo. But I can live with that. I'm just glad it's not pukin trans fluid all over my garage anymore. Compared to the current stock 4.10/TH350 setup, both are a huge improvement... 4.10 with a TH350 with 265/75/16 (31.7") tires = 2825 rpm @ 65 3259 rpm @ 75 Last edited by jocko; 11-04-2012 at 01:46 AM. |
