Darwin Awards

Is this a good thread idea? After reading C15's thread on a mindless customer and talk of what is it with people not listening, and hearing this piece on the news just now, I thought I'd start a fun thread on people doing dumb things.

I just heard this on the news. Here in Maryland, at Harford Memorial Hospital, a patient received self-inflicted burns. How? This patient had some problem with breathing and was on oxygen. Well, this patient with a breathing problem that put them in the hospital decided to smoke a cigarette which ignited the highly flammable oxygen. Talk about multiples of dumb! I feel bad for this person, but it sheesh, let's take a little part in looking out for our own well being

Think back to college chemistry. Oxygen is one of the inert gases. It is a myth that oxygen is flammable. Another myth, water conducts electricity. Fact, water will not conduct electricity.

Don't take Shorty's word, just Google it.

Chemistry 101: Oxygen is not flammable. High concentrations of oxygen used during surgeries are a potential fire hazard for patients, but that doesn't mean the O2 gas itself catches fire.

That is very true, however, if you change an atmosphere to an oxygen enriched one, the initiation of a heat source or spark will cause many things to burn at very high temperatures. Been there, seen that.

Oxygen is a catalyst. It makes other things burn faster. As for water, you need to be much more specific to be right. PURE H2O will not conduct electricity. Ocean water will defiantly conduct electricity.

One time at work we had a new hire hit a car, he went around asking everyone if they could pee in a cup for him. The kicker is he even asked the boss man...

O2 is not an inert gas, its highly reactive. More O2 means more/better combustion of things that almost don't burn. Google the way 3 astronauts (https://www.google.com/search?q=Gus+Grisom&gws_rd=ssl) died in their 100% O2 non-combustible environment while doing simulations.

Pure water is an insulator. Not much pure water in anything other than a bottle of distilled water. Take a bath with your toaster and report back about the non-conductivity of water.

You're 0-2 so far in real life scenarios which makes you our first winner...

Re: Darwin Awards

I didn't take chemistry or go to college. All I know is when I was 12 the three astronauts on Apollo 1 pre-launch were incinerated due to an electrical fire in the pure oxygen atmosphere. And I know this guy on oxygen badly burned himself smoking due to the pure oxygen that was streaming into the mask he was wearing in a hospital where smoking has been forbidden since long before public buildings began banning it. Not to mention the breathing issues that have him laying in a hospital bed on oxygen are probably due to his smoking. The only reason the fire on the cigarette or lighter burned him is because of the oxygen. What I am saying is that is just plain dumb behavior. I guess I see some sort of morbid humor in the multiple levels of dumb. I was hoping other offerings wouldn't be limited to people hurting themselves. So far so good.

Darwin award is a misnomer. His theory is based on how species adapted to survive. This guy isn't with that program. More like the theory of survival of the fittest

* Maybe this is a bad topic for a light hearted discussion. That was my intention. I realize I caused a reaction with my wording

Re: Darwin Awards

I apologize, it was not my intent to hi-jack this thread. Everything said about oxygen is true except that it is “highly flammable”. Mix enough of it with just about “anything” and that “anything” will burn.

In fishing country, the bait shops sell minnows for fish bait. They will place the minnows in a plastic bag then pump the bag full of oxygen. Over the years, many times I heard of the fisherman tucking that bag under his arm in order to lite a cigarette as he exits the bait shop. The spark causes the bag it ignite the oxygen, which promotes burning, causes the bag to burn with such intensity that it catches his clothing on fire causing burns to the body.

To add to the misinformation, “Flammable” is not a REAL word in the English language. The word is “inflammable” which means “capable of burning”. If one is old like me, you will remember when the fuel transport trucks all had the word “Inflammable” painted on them. It was a DOT requirement. The requirement was changed in the late 60’s early 70’s as the general public wrongly believed the letters “in” attached to the front of “flammable” changed its meaning to “NOT capable of burning”.

Re: Darwin Awards

Nobody getting hurt here, just a dumb ego..

Had a guy at work that didn't like the new cameras installed, and had a fit so decided to get rid of the one watching him. Was standing under it, beating up on it trying to knock it down and it swung down and looked him straight in the eye! Needless to say, he got wrote up and got a three day suspension. Plus damages to the camera. Dumb A SS!
I used to give him static, told him it was like dropping his wallet at a bank robbery ha ha.

Re: Darwin Awards

No need to apologize. Right after I posted last I realized I didn't mention I realized my wording is what touched this off. Got busy and just got back to post that rather than edit that in, then scrolled down here. You're right, and here I am using that word with no thought of what it says. De-evolution at work here . So now, if you do label something "Inflammable" people will think it won't combust. So, what does non-inflammable mean to people now?

I always heard you can light a match after using the restroom... but I have known a few guys who would not be here today if they tried that. On one job site, one guy cleared our the entire lower floor for nearly a 150' radius. Thought something crawled up inside him and died.

I believe you are supposed to use your Scottish accent when you say "Light a match Laddie!"

ps. It's the sulfur smell that you are going for, to mask the godawful stench you just made.

Not really a Darwin Award but still rather stupid. My sister after having been divorced and raised two boys Into early teens decided to date her high school crush. They hit it off and everything seemed to go well. Some of us thought this guy is just not right. Turns out after she gave birth to his son and they raised him for 5 years the dad confessed he has been gay since grade school. She kept the marriage going and did her best to hide everything. Until she found out the guy was sharing nude pics of her boys with his boyfriends. They split up, for a year. He is now back living with her and putting on a good show

We met up for a late family Christmas 2 weeks ago. He got real uneasy when he saw me with a 9mm on one side, a 1911 on the other, and my wife with her .380. He is smart enough to not even come close to my house or my kids when I'm not around. He knows I rate him below pond scum as for value to society
