Going back after 3 long years

Yep, I'm finally going back to the Arkansas river to do some white water rafting and then rock climbing, rappelling( Budha's Belly) at Gunnison Colorado.
This time I'll be going with 21 guys from my men's group at church. 16 of us are riding motorcycles. If I had more time I would ride the million dollar highway.
Leave in a couple of weeks.

US 550 between Silverton and Ouray, CO. It's between Durango and Montrose. I have ridden it, and it's beautiful. My wife rode the railroad from
Silverton down and she said that was well worth the ride too.

Yep, thinking about the skyline drive near canon city. We'll be riding through there.
Another one I'd like to do is Big Thompson Canon. Driven through there many times, never on a bike. But it's up north by Estes Park.

Re: Going back after 3 long years

We went through Oklahoma, then Raton, NM, and up to Alamos, Monte Vista, and Creed to Gunnison, and spent the night in Crested Butte.

Then From Gunnison over to Montrose and down to Farmington, NM.

Re: Going back after 3 long years

I was going to say try to get to Crested Butte if your in Gunnison. Love that town. A mecca for mountain bikes. The national Mt. bike museum is there.

Glad to hear you are doing this and kicking it up a notch or two. I wish I could join you. Just the kind of thing I love to do, but seldom seem to these days. I'm doing a flea market with my sister this weekend (Harpers Ferry,WVA). We came back to my place for the night, then to hers tonight, and kayak trip on the Shenandoah in the morning. They live on Blue Ridge Mt. above the river, the most beautiful stretch, IMO. Only white water is ripples compared to where you'll be. But, a beautiful peaceful cruise through God's bounty. Wildlife all along the way. Did I mention I wish I was going along?

When I started this thread I thought about you and your thread I buglarized in regards to Shenandoah. I remember watching a video of that fellow up around your neck of the woods. Beautiful country for sure. Tim, I wish you were going too,you always seem to be a straight shooter. BLUF....bottom line up front.
Your right about the mountain bikes being plentiful in Gunnison. (Crest Butte must be the ride from the Arkansas river to Gunnison. It's beautiful for sure)... Actually a kid on a dirt bike qscrambled right through our camp, shot up onto a rock that was probably 25' from my tent last time I was there. My instinct was to be upset with him but I was too impressed with how he got up there. If I didn't see it with my own eyes I wouldn't have believed it.

Re: Going back after 3 long years

We have the Buffalo and White River here. We haven't been this year. Life keeps getting in the way.

I crossed the HWY 65 bridge the other day and I'm not sure there was room for another person.

Of course if you like motorcycles and floating HWY 23, "The Pig Trail" takes you to the Mulberry River.

Both of those rivers look nice. In the late 80s and 90s we would do a three day trip to conoe the White river in southern Missouri. Twin bridges is where we'd set in. It's a really tame area. My brother invited me to ride down to bikes, blues and bbq in Fayetteville in September. To much going on up here with the car show and Midwest all trucks nationals. It's also bike week at our church, there will be anywhere from 30 to 40 scooters in the church.

Re: Going back after 3 long years

Been doing some thinking. Where are we meeting and when? Wouldn't that be nice to live that way? Actually, I did in my younger years. Then I started feeling like I had to get something going on with my life, settle down, buy a house, and raise a family. What was I thinking? Life has been good, but I expected to be getting back to the spontaneous stuff a tad bit more than this.
I did great at the flea market on Sunday. I sold the pair of bar stools I absolutely did not want riding back with me for $5!! Seriously, a great success for the day...other than hanging with my sis. The 1800s cast iron hay unloader I brought got a lot of attention, but when I said "I want $150 or more for it" they acted a lot less interested. Saturday went better money wise and the main thing way saying "seeya" to that stuff.
Paddling down river we took a side channel since the water was up real good, and that's when we saw the black bear about to take a drink. He just froze and watched us pass. Saw a lot of wildlife, including a bald eagle. The best rapids were class III. My brother-in-law is more cautious and avoided them. I am less cautious

I can't wait to hear your tales when you get back

It Ain't too late, we're leaving for Colorado tomorrow morning. See you there tomorrow night.. Seriously though it'd be cool to do a ride with some board members.

We are actually meeting 2 miles from my place. Hoping to get some pictures in the am.

That's nothing. Looks only 15' high. I just jump off of little stuff like that

Pictures of rock climbing are hard. You either get the whole thing with a tiny ain't you point to and say, "That's me", or you get yourself on a patch of rock.

Can't wait for more on your adventure. I put the heads on my '72!

3 years ago we went to Hartman Rocks near Gunnison, they're 160' rapell. This year we were closer to West Cliff/Silver Cliff. About 90'. That's closer to Sweet Water which is on the Arkansas river. I went from rafter to swimmer at Sharks Tooth. We high sided and I was on the low side, in I went. My buddy Tyler pulled me in the raft. I was in the water for about 5 seconds.
Here is a pic of Mark Anerderso talking to us about how safe the equipment is.

Tim, get on it man.

Re: Going back after 3 long years

It's hard to see the mountains in the background because of the fires which has burned off thousands of acres. We rode to Salida thinking we could get closer to see the fires. Eight of us stopped in a nice little Mexican restaurant in Salida. The guy on the far left is a Harley tech.

I'd be more apprehensive bungee jumping for sure.
