first chevy; my 66 stepper

its time for a name change!!!

i finally get to join the club! i found this gem right down the road from my house and the price was right. it needs the usual body work, rockers, fender bottoms, possibly cab corners, but i fell in love. its already on bags int the rear but no compressor or tank. ill be notching the rear end and z'ing the front

Re: first chevy; my 66 stepper

thanks guys! well i plan on doing the bags all around, step notch, cupped lca's (probably a z) drop spindles and power disk brake. the body work is a must but im focusing on the suspension first. i think for paint i will end up going with a primer red (love the color of f'n'low's 69) and maybe a khaki roof. ill be going with white walls and the truck came with another set of wheels already. and oh yeah, the motor is just an inline 6 with manual 4 on the floor. but the previous owner worked at a local muffler shop so it purrrrsss like a kitten. and i got the truck, 4 new wheels and tires, and a new roof in reallly good condition for $1950.

so that being said i have some questions for you experts.

1.What is the simplest way to move that fuel tank out of my cab?

2.the truck currently has manual drum brakes. when i do drop spindles i know i need to convert to disk brakes, my question is will manual disk brakes suffice? does that even make any sense? or when i grab the brakes and rotors from my local junk yard should i also grab a master cylinder?
3. where is the best website to buy rubber weatherstripping for my truck? ie; window seals & doors seals.

thanks in advance for the advice and thanks for showin so much love towards the rusty ole girl! and btw she was a 21st birthday gift to myself.

Re: first chevy; my 66 stepper

If you’re young and strong and don’t have lower back problems, there’s nothing wrong with manual disc brakes. They don’t require much more pedal pressure than manual drum brakes. The drum brakes are self-energizing, while disc brakes are not, so the discs take a little more pressure.

You’ll probably want a rebuilt master cylinder, but one from the wrecking yard might be rebuildable or useful for a core charge. You will also need to split the lines front/rear and add a proportioning valve.

I’ve had very good service buying almost all my aftermarket parts from Classicparts (formerly Chevy Duty). I bought my door seals from them back in 1998 and they still look like new.

If you do a search for “gas tank” you’ll find there are dozens of threads and options available.

Re: first chevy; my 66 stepper

Finally get an update on this page! ive been doing some little things here and there. I took the bed off and discovered a "c notch"...... i put it in quotes because im not sure if it really qualifies as one or not. awful welds, very thin pipe, no paint ground off, no paint on the pipe...... just plain bad. so i redid that and it looks much better. Also re did the airlines. the previous owner was using female air tool connectors to fill and dump the rear bags..... yeah idk either haha. i ditched those and put in a schrader valve. i ordered some suicide doors upper bag plates, and got some steel to make my own lower cups. also ordered some fitting and 50 ft of 1/4" air line. tank and valves are next on the list. MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL i got some new tires from a dude on CL. a really good deal too. they are 215/70 15's and i mounted them on some steelies that came with the truck when i bought it. im very happy with the new look of the truck! tell me what you think!

Re: first chevy; my 66 stepper

BACK IN ACTION! Ive moved a few times and now I have ended up in a house with a nice garage and 220v power! So happy to have it.

So far I leveled the frame and jigged it up. I z'd the frame 3" and in the process i swapped in a 84 suburban frame rails and crossmember while keeping the 66 frame horns. I also used the burb 5 lugs half ton brakes, arms, steering box etc.

I also cupped the lowers. currently I am working on building the notch and the 4 link out back. I will be using the 84 burb rear end also to get the 5 lug pattern out back. Check it.

My buddy and I are starting to collect a few of these old trucks and actually doing some fab work for people. We call our garage Red Cheek Kustoms.

currently the glass is out and the cab is gone. looking for a good donor cab!
