AFR Heads / Be-Aware
Be aware: I orderd a set of AFR 180cc SBC Eliminator Street Heads 0916. The heads comes standard with AFR 8017 valve springs. These springs are used with a hydraulic Roller cams (without getting in to numbers). Im still running Hydralic flat tappet cams in GEN 1 SBC, which require a different spring set up, AFR 8020. I only realized this when I was reading the Q/A on Summit website for 0916 heads. I called AFR this morning and they confirmed that a spring change was necessary. Well $310.00 later in parts, looks like I will be changing springs.
I did ask the AFR tech if could order a set of heads with 8020 springs and he stated I could but, they would have be ordered directly for AFR and would take additional 2-3 weeks. Maybe I should have researched a little more, but it still gets me PO'd! ![]() **This is not finger pointing, just sharing my experience**

Re: AFR Heads / Be-Aware
Geezer, I will attach the AFR document which will show the difference in the springs, basically a AFR-8017 spring seat pressure is 140lbs, Hydraulic Roller Cam. AFR-8020 spring seat pressure is 125lbs, Hydraulic Flat Tappet Cam. I have/going to run Lunati 10120701, Flat Tappet with this rebuild. Not so much the spring change, but the cost. AFR tech informed me that I had to buy springs, retainers, spring locaters, valve locks and just in case, seals. Nothing interchanged due to the size spring, I believe valve locks and seals were unnecessary. First time I've worked on AFR heads, so better safe than waiting for more small parts.
