Squarebody Shopping

I'm looking for a truck and have narrowed it down. Not interested in a project. Prices have changed a lot over the years so I'm not sure what's reasonable anymore. I've provided links to pictures and given seller provided descriptions for each. If you see any red flags please point them out. Could those of you that are willing, please give your opinon as to what a fair offer would be for each? Thanks.

$15,500 now $14k. Lowest he says he will accept.

HAS VIDEO 1987 GMC R 1500 5.0 V8 The heads, head gasket, water pump, lifters, pushrods and associated gaskets were done about 2 years ago. The fuel tanks, filters and pumps were done 6 years ago and the TBI fuel injection system was rebuilt recently. It does have some surface rust in the usual places (door Jambs) but nothing rusted through. Super clean truck, but clear is peeling on hood. Interior is 10/10. 4.5/6 drop kit, brand new us mags all around 20x8/20x10 with new tires all around! Power windows and locks. AC and both tanks work.

Initial price $25k then 21k now $20,500 says that's as low as he will go. I'm leaning towards this one because I couldn't duplicate it myself at that price considering I wouldn't be able to do the work myself.

1986 Chevy factory short bed, two wheel drive truck showing 82288. Not sure if they are correct miles, has been LS swapped with a 5.3 V8 and 4L60E auto trans out of a 70000 mile truck. Power steering, power brakes, air, tilt, and American Auto Sound retro stereo. Frame was painted.
100% rust free all original body panels and original tan paint with some killer patina.
All new door to door interior from TMI, with new inside trim.
New wheels and tires, American Racing wheels.
Front tires 245/45/20, Rear tires 295/40/20
Has 4" front drop, 5" rear drop , perfect stance.
Everything works, runs and drives.

First one, not enough outside pictures of the truck. Even though it is probably in my price range, I would steer clear. Rest, can't say anything for sure other than out of my price range.

1, 4, 5, or 6 would be the ones I dug further into.

#1 states a big block in the ad spec info but I see LS/5.3 in the pics?

I like how clean #3 and #4 are. But I think the asking prices area little high for what they are. Maybe $13k and $11k respectively are more reasonable.

I think there’s value in each. What are your goals with it? Around town cruiser or Power Tour Long Hauler? Parts store runner or Autocross challenge? What are your preferences? Something to tinker on? Or buy it and drive, no questions asked? Like the originality or enjoy the modern amenities? We gotta know more about who you are and what you hope to get out of the truck...

#2 is most expensive, but has a modern drivetrain swap, full interior and looks to have had the front end gone though and freshened up. Is that stuff valuable to you? Hard to beat the power and reliability, along with a modern overdrive trans, that the 5.3/4l60e will provide... and those TMI interiors aren’t cheap either... but is that your cup of tea?

Me personally I like the LS swap, but could do without the interior...

I like the two tone brown and tan on truck #3, but would love a LS over that 305 TBI.

#1 is a very clean example... love how solid and easily the doors shut! it’s the little things! But not thrilled with the peeling clear coat over white. I like patina in some cases but on white paint it looks sort of ratty to me. Total personal opinion...

#4 is definitely more of a 90’s style look with those wheels... while that’s easy to change, it isn’t necessarily cheap... add 1,500-2k for the us Mags 18’s/20’s that the other trucks are running. But again that depends on your preference...

#5 isn’t a bad choice either! Fairly clean overall... and at that price it’d leave some room if you did want to drop in a fresh crate 350, 383 or even go the LS route...

Good luck in your hunt! Lots of good options.

The truck in the video below is what my future goal would be for the truck I buy. Kinda crappy on the outside so if for example something happens to it at the grocery store I may not notice or care. LT4, Ridetech coil over suspension, Wilwood brakes and a nice clean interior. I do not want the $10k wheels (would like the same size though), no recaro seats (I'm ok with a bench), no fuel cell in the bed, no roll bar and not sure if I want a manual transmission. If I were to buy the $20k truck then I wouldn't get the LT4.

I follow these guys on IG and they always post some pretty nicely done short bed squares. Their prices are a little out of my range but I don’t find them to be outrageous. They have a few nice trucks in the low to mid 20k. I have no affiliation and have zero idea on whether they build them in house or source them, but just figured I’d drop the link in here. If you’re looking for something turn key then they might be a good option.

100% agree with that statement... however you have to allow for the possibility that this buyer is someone who doesn’t mind paying a premium for a truck that’s been sorted out and is a turn key ready to go ride. While many of us on this site (myself included) would much rather score that barn find survivor and freshen it up to driver status ourselves, there are plenty of buyers out there that have no interest in taking on a project, and would love to plunk down the cash on Sunday and go cruising that same afternoon. I made the assumption that this buyer was in that camp based on the trucks he linked.

Thanks for bringing this up. I didn't think to mention it. I will add this info to the first post. Your assumption is correct, no projects for me. I enjoy doing regular maintenance etc. Engine swaps, body work and so on is too much for me.

Many times, flippers don't do the work either. They buy from the 'Average Joe', clean them up (detail experience), take better quality images, & maybe a set of big wheels.... Then back on the market. At a marked up price.

Nothing wrong w/that if you know you're paying more than average market price for that 'convenience'.

An issue I'm having is determining what average market price is. Prices I've seen are all over the place.
