Just WHY?!?

This thread is for posting questions.

Any question will do.

Serious, silly, sarcastic, or sincere.

I will start with a serious question (yet kind of funny). I truly want to know.

Why do people WALK on the street when there is a perfectly nice sidewalk? I am not exaggerating, I see this all the time. Probably 6 times in the last 2 months. I understand for serious joggers it may be easier on the joints. I am talking about WALKERS. I really would like to understand the benefit.

Re: Just WHY?!?

I can't answer why people walk on the street. When I run I'm on the asphalt because it's easier on the joints than concrete.

Re: Just WHY?!?

I ask that same question. I do understand the running, though. But, I used to run on the school track because those are usually rubberized asphalt and there are no cars., plus it's easy to measure distance. That's what they are made for. The road is made for cars. EDIT: On second thought, roads came before cars. I guess I was thinking paved roads once speeds of vehicles and large trucks came along

Also, when there are no sidewalks, we are supposed to walk/run against the traffic, not with it as that woman is. Aside from the law, wouldn't you want to see the vehicles speeding toward you so you can judge if they are moving over or not. A little self preservation here?

Re: Just WHY?!?

Supposedly asphalt is easier on the joints vs. concrete sidewalks for walking or jogging. Not sure how much softer the asphalt is, tbh. But you won't see me walking the streets when vehicles are swerving around the neighborhood, nope! I see people walking in the street who won't get out of the way, because they have the "right of way". Remember the old commercials from the '60s where they were talking about, "Dead right!"?

Re: Just WHY?!?

When I run, it's early (4:45) and there's almost no traffic. I do run against the traffic and I wear reflective gear. Running on a track bores me, especially over a 5 or 6 mile distance. Plus the track is flat, and I like to run hills - big ones.

Flexible pavement structures are one of the things I specialized in as a combat engineer in the Army, and asphalt is considerably softer than concrete.

Re: Just WHY?!?

Maybe habit? That sidewalk looks fairly new. Maybe she has been walking that route for many years before the sidewalk existed?

While asphalt may be softer, I have found that it is often slicker due to the various fluids that leak out of vehicles.

Re: Just WHY?!?

I posted on this a while back...Why do people pull up to get gas, then go inside the store and do their grocery shopping for the week, wander back out talk to 1 or 2 people then finally pump their gas? In the meanwhile other gas customers are shuffling positions around these idiots to get their gas and leave. Get your damn gas then pull into the lined parking area then go do your shopping! I truly believe these people are single digit IQ simpletons.

Re: Just WHY?!?

I believe a very intelligent person can be more arrogant than ones of lesser intelligence when it comes to being considerate of the needs of others, such as buying gas.

I get gas at maybe the last place that lets cash customers pump first. Definitely none left the closer you get to the suburbs and city. so I pump my gas and start walking to go inside to pay and this butthead takes a break from his phone long enough to slide his power window down and bursts out with, "Hey! Where are you going?!". I point toward the door and say, "Paying for my gas".

If I ran the roads, I'd find a dirt road, softer yet, less traffic. Cross-country runners run on the ground. They say running is hard on your joints, period. That's why I can't run anymore.

Pump hogs! I can't stand that either. I had one just sitting in her car talking on the phone. Blocking the only Diesel pump in the station. I was running on fumes. My Scottish temper went up and I thought "You've got a big truck Paul. Just push her'. Bounce that little Kia right back to Korea. (Evil thoughts)

But cooler heads prevailed and I didn't do that but I did make my presence known by getting so close to her rear bumper that you'd have a hard time slipping a piece of paper between the two vehicles. She moved. I guess everyone will have to wait on Facebook to see pictures of what she had for lunch. Sorry about the interruption but I was out of fuel.

I really did want to push her though. Wham bam thank you ma'am.

Re: Just WHY?!?

Gas stations are a great place to gauge the lack of common sense and common courtesy of people. It`s comical how many idiots just stare at the pump, like they`ve never seen one before and have no idea how it works. Then once they start pumping, go back inside their car and start playing with their phone. Paying no attention that the pump has shut off and their tank is full. Not to mention how they take their sweet ass time, while cars are lined up waiting on them. It used to really piss me off, but now I just shake my head and laugh.

Re: Just WHY?!?

I get behind people at the pump with the hose hanging on the pump and figure they're about to leave but taking their time. I figure they'll be pulling off soon now that someone is behind them waiting. Nope, out of sheer consideration for the guy waiting, they get out and start pumping their freekin' gas! Ho.....LY! Most gas stations have parking spaces and it's not AT THE PUMP!!!

Ok - I'll play.

Same question, only for cyclists.

Why would somebody ride in the road when there is a perfectly good "safety path" (like "Rails to Trails") right next to the road?

Re: Just WHY?!?

And another:

Lately I've seen people pull into the right turn lane - and stop.

They park there and look at their phone, or balance their checkbook, or do their taxes, or whatever. Especially odd when the lane they are blocking enters into a parking lot with 10,000 parking spots in it.

Why?

Re: Just WHY?!?

In some of my racing classes we have a "Driver's Meeting" at the start of the day to go over some of the ground rules and do's-and-dont's.

I wish we could do that before my daily commute.

Ugh. I hate that - especially when there are 50 gasoline pumps and ONE diesel pump - and they are blocking the diesel.

I've even had people cut me off, hop out to put fuel in - and realize they are about to put diesel in their gas burner.

The last guy that did that was so embarrassed he didn't even pull around to a different pump. He slunk out and took off down the road.

Somehow I manage to get behind people that have never been to a McDonalds before.

Re: Just WHY?!?

I'm Pulling up to the pump and then going inside and then coming back out to pump my fuel , I'm not parking twice just because your in a hurry . Wait for your turn at the pump , Poor prior planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on mine . Leave earlier for work , don't run your car down to fumes . Use some common sense that the world doesn't revolve around you and your time frame . I'm not calling out anyone but todays' society is in chaos with road rage and the I'm special get out of my way mindset . I drive the speed limit because I don't want speeding tickets , I drive in the right lane , if someone wants to run 85 down the interstate have at it ,Go around don't tailgate while your watching your phone , Who are all these people talking to while driving ?

Re: Just WHY?!?

One thing I have noticed is people in the turning lanes will leave a full car length between themselves and the car in front of them.......why

Another separate why is this patient (I work in healthcare) decided they felt like they did not want to pay their copay because supposedly someone at my work sent them to the wrong place. One our facility has an automated call back reminder system and logs phone acknowledgements. Second the patient is on medicaid and the copay is 2 dollars for office visit and 3 dollars for the brace she was given??????? I am not bashing all medicaid patients just this one and the nerve to even suggest this. This is more like a WOW followed by a WHY

This is fine.

Just don't do a week's worth of grocery shopping while you are in there. And the whole lottery ticket ritual.

And don't block the only diesel pump.

Re: Just WHY?!?

Then there is this phenomenon going on lately. Somebody is coming up to an intersection or a driveway where they are going to make a turn--be it right or left. Signaling is optional, but before they finally make the turn after slowing down for a block they turn the vehicle in the complete opposite direction before swinging it around in the direction they want to turn like they have a 40' trailer behind them. It's like the steering wheel will only move a 1/4 turn or something. I've seen the same thing in a parking lot where the lanes are tight. Instead of making a tight turn they'll swing all the way over to the opposite side almost skinning the bumper of the parked cars on the other side of the lane.

I spoke up about that one day while I had been waiting in line for about 10 minutes to get my 100.00 worth of gas. About 5 employees in the store and only 1 at the register. I said something loud and something like this, '' when everybody is done grocery shopping I'd like to get some gas,,, this is a gas station right? --something to that effect. This a a station that has a taco bell in it and they also provide bakery goods and of course the complete mini mart thing going on. It's not like they were short on employees

Good one, I notice the same thing.

Making a right hand turn and not merging to the right side of the street close to the curb. They need to impede traffic by maintaining a 10ft buffer away from the edge of the street when turning.

Re: Just WHY?!?

A four way stop sign intersection is always a treat. Either the car across the intersection attempts to turn left first and pulls out in front of you, when you have the right-of-way to go straight. Or the car across the intersection is going straight and just sits there waiting for you to turn left first, while you`re waiting on them to go straight.

Re: Just WHY?!?

man the one i want answered is the four way stop, when its YOUR TURN, WHY do you wave someone else through?

you arent being nice, you are creating an uneasy issue for everyone else at the other three side of the intersection who already knows its your turn. if you dont want to learn the rules stay your butt at home.

the pumps here are prepay, and if you pay cash you have to go in first with too much cash and go in again for the change. the only time i complain about the pumps is between 1130 and 1 when all the trades guys have their trucks and trailers parked all around (not at) the pumps to use the free microwave and sit and eat their lunches.
