Early built 72 with 71 cab?

Discovered this interesting little truck this week. I heard that a guy close by was cleaning up a property and was hauling scrap off. There was an old Chevy truck that was pulled out of the weeds. I asked around and found out who owned it and told him I was interested in it. He let me look at it and told me at some point someone has stolen the doors, tailgate, VIN plate and glovebox door. Also, kids had knocked out the windows. I looked over what was left of it and saw the raised pad for the rear view mirror and told the guy it was a 71 model. I bought it, drug it home and started tinkering on it, even got it running! After noticing the 72-only longer alternator upper bracket and a few other clues, I checked the frame VIN number - 2S100077. This truck was the 77th unit built at the St. Louis plant. What’s left of the truck appears to be untouched - original paint, tower clamps under hood and GM stamped radiator hoses. Could it be that GM used a left over 71 cab?

I've seen a claim here of a late '70 truck with disc brakes, so it may be possible. GM was pretty aggressive with scrapping parts, but maybe that was just at the assembly plant level. Nothing like watching "snowflake" Trans Am wheels struck with a sledgehammer and tossed into the dumpster to make a grown man cry. As a kid, I remember my dad telling me that Studebaker changed things on the line, like ignition, and you needed to bring the serial number of the vehicle to the parts store to make sure you got the right tune-up parts. Never saw it during the time I worked at a parts store, though. Ford had rolling changes on their small blocks, which could bite the unwary on the ass...cams, lifters, timing chains, cam gears with and without spacers, etc. There is a reason one sees old Fords with SBCs in them. Though I went to a car/truck meetup a couple of years ago where the owner of a Model A(?) Ford put in a V6 Buick, complete with a bunch of Kenny-Bell performance components.

Thanks for sharing. That wouldn’t surprise me. Fwiw early 72 Flint Blazers used the older style dash without the pickup style speaker grille in the metal before transitioning to the pickup style.

I'd say that you are spot on. Probably first day of production if you were able to research the archives. Looks like it was a pretty decent truck before thieves and vandals got to it.

Too bad the VIN and SPID got robbed, could possibly be an interesting truck to restore, with the low production number and all. Pretty plain truck though. Looks like 307, gauges, deluxe paint and radio were the only goodies on this truck.

My 68 has 67 doors (original) with the inner bracket and what I believe a modification to accept the 68 and up outside door handles . Also had 67 arm rests

Did pre 72 all have the rear view mirror boss on the cab my 68 is smooth .

Non of my other trucks have this dimple in the door handle area so I would say gm did running changes on the line

Yes they did some early 64 Avanti still had the round headlamp glass covers and the 3EE battery when they changed over to the square headlight covers the battery was changed to a normal sized battery and the hood prop support moved to the passenger side . Also in the middle of the run door drip moldings were added . They did the same with all the cars .

Very cool only the 77th one built. Seems you don't have proof thats the original cab. Doesn't mean it's not. Yeah, gm used up their stock, even in my may built 1971, where the cables were top post and a 1970 3 port ac vac control valve, they simply capped one port
