79 silverado big ten no crank help
I recently acquired a one owner, 79 silverado with 109k. It ran flawlessly, my son turned the truck off, and when he went to restart it, it won't turn over. The starter is not engaging with the key. We tried jumping the starter, it turned over but still didn't engage the flywheel.
I'm thinking ignition, or solenoid but those are from my very very limited knowledge. Thank you in advance for any help. |

Re: 79 silverado big ten no crank help
Welcome to the forum.
I don't normally visit this side, but I will respond. It sounds like the solenoid on the starter could be going out, but jumping it won't necessarily allow the gear to shoot out, just allow it to spin. If you tap on the starter with a hammer, then try with the key, does it engage the flywheel? Also, what is it doing when you turn the key? Is there clicking? Do the interior lights dim when trying to start? Could also be the battery...

Pull the starter and test it on the ground or take it to a big chain auto parts store and they will test it for you for free.
If it's a stick make sure the peddle is pushed down all the way. |

Re: 79 silverado big ten no crank help
Try this.
Key in the off position. Jumper from the big lug to the small lug on the solenoid. A screwdriver will help do that. If the starter engages and cranks the motor then it’s likely the neutral safety switch at fault. It’s usually located on the steering column inside close to the firewall. Check the wires are plugged in and the switch isn’t loose. |

If that all check out ok that was said then thinking trimming chain. wore/lose or broken. But check the distributor plug wires parts test coil and if they look in good shape first.
