71 Wrecker
Brought this thing home the other day...
![]() Everything seems to work. It's a 4x4 three on the tree 1/2 ton with a Holmes hook on the back. Just going to use it around the shop, lifting out engines, lifting off cabs & beds. Moving the old junkers around if needed. Used a front clip I had lying around, made quite a difference. Little bit of nostalgia for ya. ![]() Last edited by vtblazer; 10-12-2004 at 07:16 PM. |

Kurt that wrecker looks a lot better with a nose on it than when we hauled both of them up there yesterday.

Wrecker
Mines just a "little wrecker" (1/2ton)
The key fob that came with it has the business's name/number and location where it was used for working as a tow truck, funny thing is that on the back of the key fob it has written on it "little wrecker" ![]() |

There's one in use by a repair shop in Rose Hill, KS, need to stop and get some pics of it. Know of one also used in Wichita, KS. Sure cool to see.
Vtblazer, I assume the winch is PTO powered. Is it off the transfer case or tranny? Never have quite understood how you operate this type of winch.

Seems to operate when you put the t-case in neutral and the tranny in gear. Have to use both forward and reverse gears to make it either real in or real out... ![]() Canadian - yes, it's a shortie. Frenchblue - looks like someone just used a regular 4x4 frame and axels, looks to be standard 6 lug to me. Last edited by vtblazer; 10-13-2004 at 06:39 PM. |

Pretty sweet...but why would anyone (as in a buisness) ever use a 1/2 ton for a wrecker???

![]() just kiddin, that thing is cool. A little bit ot, but could someone (Fred?) clear up a few questions I have about transmission run PTOs...I knew that with a transfer case mount PTO, you have to put it in N and use the transmissions gears. This is one of the biggest benefits of a PTO winch, you can winch faster than any electric or hydraulic winch out there, however you cant move the truck while winching. But, when you have a transmission mounted PTO, you put the tranny in the gear you want to use, and engage the PTO, and it will work for whatever gear you are in (theoretically, I wouldnt wanna winch in 4th gear @ 55 mph, lol)? Would a standard single speed PTO work on a transmission, or would you need one of the multispeed units? I only ask because I know of a '70 C30 dump that has a 292/SM465 speed, and a chelsea pto run off the tranny for the dump bed. I am guessing its a single speed, and wondering if I could use it to power a winch on my truck, off of my SM465. I would like to winch while rolling (using wheel assist off road when stuck), that is another reason I am curious to using a PTO on the tranny. Sorry for the ot.

That single spd pto is probobly better suited to a hydraulic pump (like that dumptruck will have). Of course... that means you could get a hydraulic winch... maybe have a hydraulic generator and/or air compressor too...
