Make it a daily driver??
Ok as it sits now, I'm gonna need a new daily driver. My 87 4x4 suburban is just p*ssing me off. I really want another 4x4. I used it quite a bit. And not to go 'wheeling. 4 low and a tow strap can do some amazing things!!
![]() ![]() Making the 69 a daily driver. To do it, would move me forward in some aspects, and set me back in others. For intance. Daily driver also means snow. And in IL., snow means SALT . The body on my truck is by no means perfect, but is nice for a IL truck. My current engine has problems. I need 80w90 to keep the oil pressure up. ![]() Pull out crappy 355, and install a L6. This is what the truck came with, and did great for 30 some years. L6 would be better in the snow. And on gas. Install my TH400. It needs to be rebuilt, but I have a auto cross member, and a drive shaft that fits the truck. Convert to power/disk brakes. Currently manual/drum. Install my 72 3.07 pozi axle? How bad is a 3.07 with a L6? I think it would perform better in the snow. If I were gonna do this I would have to sell the 87 to fund the project. I have about half of the stuff needed to do this. I dunno, I really want a 4x4 but I just don't think I can do it. There is a 71/72 K20 here I can pick up for a $1000, but it needs an engine. Also it has been majorly messed with. It has a C30 cab and clip on the front. It is also sitting on 35's and has a plow. And that just seems like a world of trouble to me. I dunno, what do you guys think? Thanks, Jason. |

Seems like a lot of work and money to get a truck ready to be destroyed in the Illinois winter. Why can't you change the cam in that other 350?

I would sell the 87, get the 69 together and buy the 4X4 with the left over $1000

Oh ya Chris, for some strange reason, I really don't want a V8 in a daily driver. I had a 68 LWB with a 250 in the snow and it performed really good. (for a 2x4)

I would see the 87. Keep your 69 as is and keep in the dry and all nice. Then use the money from the 87 to buy a cheap, good running, but not pretty looking daily driver.

I must be a freak of nature because I think the unpretty plow truck looks pretty cool! I'd ditch the plow hookups though.

That K20 dosen't look too bad for a grand, but your gas mileage
is really gonna suck with that :S. I would be tempted to buy it, and take out a couple of those lift blocks and put some 33's on it. A 250 is gutless enough with 3.73 gears, so it would proably be a real dog with 3.07 gears behind it. What is wrong with a nice mild SBC? With a RV cam, headers, HEI, and a well tuned Q-Jet you could proably pull off 13 mpg around town if you kept your foot out of it, and it would have alot more power than the 250. But, your '69 looks pretty solid, and i wouldn't want to rust it out by driving it in the winter. Maybe you should get a crappie little FWD car to drive in the snow, and let it rust out instead of your '69.

I thought about dropping the lift on the K20. But.... the those scary blocks are only in the rear. I would need springs in the front. Then, that truck becomes a project.

I would sell the 87 and buy the 72 4x4,it doesnt look all that bad,put that 350 with a cam in the 4x4 and put a 4 speed in it,take those dumb mirrors off and drive it,those blocks arnt as much of a scare in the back, but NEVER run them in the front, looks like it only has 3 leafs in the back, mabe you could take 1 block out and just put 2-3 more leafs in it...
