help me plz

i have finally got my truck going and ive put in the holley fuel pressure regulator. now that ive got the right pressure goin to my carb it dies when running and i have to turn the idle up way high to keep it running so im wondering if my carb needs the air/fuel mix adjusted or if my timing is a little off. i dont know much about distributors or carbs so im just lost. how do i tell which it is and how do i fix it. its a 1989 gmc 1/2 ton 2wd has 305 in it with edelbrock preformer intake and carb. how do i tell lean or rich and advanced or retarded timing?
