Got my compressor - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Well, I got my air compressor today. It's in the garage thanks to the help of three other guys to get it off the truck. I was reading through the instructions because this is the first compressor like this that I've owned. It said I need to take it off the palet and bolt it to the floor. Is this really necessary? It seems really solid on the palet and it sure would be alot easier. Now I've got to get me a cutoff valve and some air line. Any suggestions (or pics) of the type of valve to run out of the tank. Also, do I need anything else there like a gauge or anything. Thanks.

a gauge would be good, but I suppose not necessary. You can use pipe fittings and nipples, etc. from a hardware store to plumb it. You can put a T on the end of a nipple and that will give you spots for two airlines.

It is an upright, correct? Never had an upright, but I know lots of guys who leave them on the shipping pallets. I'd probably get real worried about it falling over and eventually bolt it down though.

Here is a link to sears that will show you some examples of fittings and quick connects, don't have to buy them there though, lots of folks sell them. Lowes or homie despot will probably have everything you need too.

i've got an 80gallon upright// i just mounted the metal feet on small 4x4x1 pieces of oak hasn't fell over or moved in the past 8years// i unloaded it myself using the engine crane

This probably a repeat of what cdowns said.

If you're going to leave it on the pallet, make damn sure that, under the feet of the tank, there is blocking that ties the top slats of the pallet to the bottom slats and everything is securely lag bolted. That way the top slats can't flex & break.

When I have to haul big upright compressors in for repair, if they're not secured that way, I refuse to take them.
When the clerks complain, I simply explain, "You're not the one that has to pick the SOB up off the truck floor, and you're not the one that's going to get a good a$$ chewing because of the additional damage to the unit. End of discussion."
I have refused the same compressor for several store visits in a row because some guy thought I was stupid so he wouldn't do what I requested.
Eventually, after they got tired of seeing the compressor sitting on the receiving area floor, they came around to my employer's way of thinking.

JUst my experiences & my .02 to try & save you a ton of grief.

when I put mine in I took it off the pallet and set it on a couple of old heavy truck mudd flaps to isolate noise and vibration on the floor did not bolt it to the floor yet but it is in a corrner and pretty stable

If you decide to take it off the pallet, stall mats make decent isolator pads. They are available at farm/horse supply stores.
They make vibration isolators, but they charge an arm and a leg for them, I've used this trick to mount quite a few electric motors too.

jus tuse a ball valve we have 2 tanks at compressors at work not uprights but we used 2x4 about a foot longer then the computer on each side they dont walk or anything.

here is a picture of ours

I've also seen them have Hockey Pucks mounted to the feet or between the floor and the feet when they bolted it down.
