Talking New To The Boards and Need Help

Well first of all I would like to say hello to everyone on this site. Been lurking for a while and just been waiting for my account to validate. Good stuff I found so far.

Now to the good stuff. I recently just purchased my dream truck about a week ago. Its a 1972 C10 LWB with a 350/350, painted yellow and white with lots of surface rust I recently just bought a second cab for it and its going off to the sandblaster since its 100% rest free Hopefully my build goes as planned and I will post up pics soon.

For the part with the help. The truck is drivable but once I get her going on the freeway I get her up to about 65 - 70 and then it bogs out and then comes right back. I have asked a few people what might be the prob. Everyone I talk to tells me its the fuel filter and might be the fuel pump as well. Went to my local kragen and picked up both. Truck is currently on blocks so I won't know if it fixed it till mid week when I get my new rally wheels and tires.

Any input would be great and thanks in advance

Welcome to the board!

Few questions.

Are you running the stock Q-jet? its filter might be dirty.

second, If you have another fuel filter where is it located.

Between the tank and pump or between the pump and carb.

Re: New To The Boards and Need Help

In addition to the carb filter and an inline filter check. You should also check the fuel pickup in the fuel tank. As your fuel demands increase, it may not be able to supply enough fuel and that is why it is falling on its face. A weak fuel pump can also cause this problem.

I have also had this problem caused by bad float adjustment in the carb.

Try running some fuel system cleaner thru the system. Unfortunately, most auto parts stores only sell the weak stuff.

Before doing that, make sure your truck is tune up. If it has been sitting for a while, it may be neglected and just needs some attention. Worst case, you will have a freshly tuned up truck that runs good until 65 mph

welcome to the forums!
I also agree, it does sound like a fuel issue.

Re: New To The Boards and Need Help

Sorry for the late reply but just been really busy with work and no time to play on here.

Ok here are the updates.... I went ahead and changed out the fuel filter that is located in the carb and changed out the fuel pump. I tried checking for another filter but have not been able to find it. I'm starting to think it only has one. Truck has a flat tire right now so I have not had to chance to take it for a dirve after the repairs but will give a update as soon as I do.

Thanks to everyone that replied

Are you still running the stock points? May be something else to look at. Mallory makes a kit to convert your stock points to electronic. It's easy to install and works like a dream. Cnut

Re: New To The Boards and Need Help

I had this problem. My truck would run like a raped ape up to about 60MPH and then die. I replaced the points style distributor with HEI, new carb, fuel filter and made sure the sock and tank were free of rust and debris. Still had the problem. Ordered a new fuel pump and rod and when I was taking the rubber lines off the fuel pump I noticed that rubber hose running from the tank to the pump was swollen shut. Don't know if they used the wrong kind of rubber line or it was just old. Changed that out and it took care of the problem.

Welcome to the board.

Re: New To The Boards and Need Help

Oh, young Jedi, The only dumb question is the one not asked. Ignition points were the predecessor to the electronic ignitions of today. Now I'm not quite old enough to remember exactly when the Electronics became standard ('73-74?) but I know my first two cars('69 Impala and '73 Nova SS) had points. Points tended to "float" (stray electricity) at high rpm and this causes the flutter at higher speeds, and the design of the HEI system prevents this. I still know how to use a match book cover to set the dwell in a pinch. Hope this helps, if someone more knowledgable in this, broaden my knowledge too. Cnut

'75 was the first production HEI, also the first year of CAT converters which demanded unleaded fuel to be used in passenger cars.

72b! Welcome to the best place for us truck owners, you will learn a lot and have fun with stories told. I lived in your area for a few years, and I am still in the general area to visit buds in the San Juan Cap and Dana Point areas.
Hit me up if you need some in person assistance, I'd be glad to make the trip over the Ortega on my HD
