Emissions test
I tried to get my truck emission tested yesterday and it failed. Apparently I was running a little rich. Max HC allowed was 4.00 at 2500 RPM and I was running at 4.03. At idle max I was running 4.63. Go figure.

I have had the truck for about 5 years now and have lived in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and Nevada. This is the first state I have been to that I have had to test it. You are only exempt in Nevada if it is 67 or older.

Lean it out a bit, a new air filter and fresh plugs and a little messing witht eh carb adjustments will go a long way on the sniffer.

Nothing in Grants Pass Oregon needs to be smogged. My New Yukon is exempt. My 72 and my motorhome is also... In Calif, they exempted everything 73 and older.

That's pretty sad. I think it's a ricer plot to rid the streets of all the really cool rides so they will get more attention. I find it hard to believe that we allow this to happen. For crying out loud, these trucks didn't even know what emission controls were when they were made. Except for the token California trucks. They don't perform these checks for free. You pay for them and the government gets bigger. The idiots that work here doing emission check don't even look like they can tie there shoes. The bad thing is I have to allow them to drive my vehicle on a tread mill and they suck at it. They can't keep the speed where it needs to be so the test takes forever.

If you are happy with the way it runs and you don't want to mess with the carb try this. Create an intentional vacuum leak. Should lean it out enough to pass the test. Just dissconnect a small vacuum hose or remove a plug on a manifold vacuum. It needs to be a small one or the drop in vacuum will cause the carb to go into the power circuit and make it even worse. Have fun!

ckenwright, I live in Henderson and my truck always had a problem passing. I retard the timing and turn the idle mixture screws in until it just about runs and it passes everytime. I just put Classic Rod plates on my truck and I don't have to get tested anymore as long as I don't drive more then 2500 a year. If I get close I'll disconnect the speedometer.

Vermont, does smog tests on certain vehicles, but with our older trucks, they're exempt. If it had a converter on it from the factory, it has to have one to get inspected. That's about the only rule.

Those tests suck. None of the inspection stations do it in this town on the newer vehicles anyway. They just do the horn, lights, and few other things, I've seen people run straight pipes and pass.

Simply change the plugs(if it needs them), oil & filter, pull air cleaner out, & then remove PCV from valve cover & just let it lay on top of it. what this will do is, bring cleaner air into the motor. the oil is contaminated with gasoline, which will make you have HIGH HC's so change it. Removing the air cleaner & the PCV will also allow more clean air into your motor. My 84 Burb flunked big time too because of HIGH HC's & a emissions guy I know told me to do these things & I passed w/flying colors. As long as it says you PASSED, thats all they care about...joe

In Texas, the law is if your vehicle is 25 years or older you only have to have safety inspection. This is what i have always heard. Check with your laws for Houston. I think an inspection station is tryin to make a quick buck. Our 89 Isuzu Pickup failed 3 times....for stupid stuff. 1st time for a plug in the tire...they couldn't put it on the dyno. 2nd time they wouldn't put it on the dyno because the tail light lense had a crack in it. 3rd time it actually failed on the dyno. Took it to our mechanic and he couldn't figure out why it failed. So he gave us a sticker. But check the laws because i know in North Texas you only have to have inspection. It'd be worth a search or to on the internet or a phone call.

Since I am in the Air Force I have to register my truck on base. In order to get my truck registered, I have to comply with state law even though I have out-of-state tags. They tell me I have to do smog my truck so I have to smog it.
Thanks for all the input, I think I am going to put a dwell meter on it, adjust the timing and give it a tune-up after I adjust the carb. Then maybe for safe measure I will take out the filter before I smog it. ![]() |
